How do we Build Community Spirit in Times of Isolation?
A story on how nature can inspire us to find new ways to come together even as we stay apart…
I witnessed an interesting natural phenomenon recently…or, perhaps it just came to my attention now that I have more time.
I have a daily practice of keeping some food out for the birds after every meal. Once a crow spots me and the food, he’ll start cawing, and calling out to his entire network of friends and family.
Even if he’s alone, the crow will look to his left and right, to see if they are more crows, before he starts eating…
Crows have great community spirit, and ensure they never eat alone.
Compare this to recent times, when the news of a national lockdown saw several people flock to stores and stock up on supplies… Sometimes, taking so much that there was nothing left on the shelf for others!
Why has mankind become so individualistic and self-centered over the years? Is it finally time for us to start learning from nature once again, and imbibing the spirit of community inherent in birds and animals?
This time of lockdown may actually be an opportunity to think creatively about how we can include others in our thoughts, prayers and actions…even if it is from the safe confines of our homes.
Use the space below to write your different ideas on how each one of us can make a difference to another, as we stay isolated and quarantined.
The video link below lists a few ideas, but feel free to share your own views as well… Let’s together think of ways to become one united community even as we stay apart, stay home and stay healthy!
