How to Do Something Great

How to Do Something Great

Ever have a crazy idea?

Something GREAT

Something so nuts, it makes you kinda nervous…

And at the same time, you just know...

You have to make it real.

This can sound like…

  • I want to launch my own company.
  • I wish I could write a book.
  • I want to start a national Bagel Burger chain of restaurants.
  • I wish I could quit my job and [FILL IN ANYTHING HERE].
  • I really want to [FILL IN ANYTHING HERE…THE CRAZIER THE BETTER]

You truly want it to happen.

You think about it all the time.

But, it’s just too hard.

              Too uncertain.

                             Too risky.

                                            Too scary.

And so, you think of these ideas—these amazing things you want to do—and what happens?

Nothing.

Well…not really nothing. Life…

Life happens.

Other things get in the way. You’re busy. We all are.

And time—or really the lack of it—becomes our barrier. At least, that’s what we’d like to believe.

But, really, it’s an excuse.

What’s actually happening when time is the barrier? You’re simply stuck in a step of the Intention Cycle...or perhaps you haven't even begun to pedal.

What’s the Intention Cycle? I’m glad you asked.

The Intention Cycle is the approach to actually achieve those crazy ideas.

To take the risk. To see it through. To live the life you dream about...

...Even if it seems too uncertain, too risky, or too scary.

The Intention Cycle is how to do something GREAT.

It looks like this:

The Intention Cycle

This approach is how I allowed myself to take a big risk...to leave the stability, steady paycheck, and fantastic colleagues of a corporate gig for the uncertainty, sporadic income, and isolated world of sole-proprietorship.

It's how I am able to create my own something great. The first part? A practical course that helps anyone be more clear and concise...more compelling...and, more persuasive in their communications. In other words, how to better communicate ideas...products...companies...so you can make your own something great happen more easily.

My "Do Something Great" is turning out to be an amazing experience...and it's all driven by Intention.

Let's go though a cycle so you can see what I mean.

It all starts with...

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the ability to be aware of yourself, your actions, and what’s going on around you (and even in your own head) at any given moment in time.

It leads to the ability to be an observer in difficult situations. And, it’s why so many dreamers turned doers practice meditation.

Perhaps most importantly, mindfulness leads to…

Emotional Maturity

Emotional Maturity is the ability to be in control of your emotional state. It’s the realization of what you can control—and perhaps more importantly—what you cannot.

Emotional Maturity is an easy thing to understand…and a difficult thing to consistently practice.

The best analogy I’ve been able to come up with? Zombies.

Emotional Maturity sets you up for…

Comfort in Discomfort

If you want to do something incredible, it’s not going to be easy. It’s not going to be quick. And…you guessed it…it’s not going to be comfortable.

Comfort in Discomfort is how you get past those pangs of doubt…the minor setbacks…the major setbacks…and anything else that stands in your way.

It’s said that to be an overnight sensation takes years of hard work, dedication, discomfort, and perpetual......

Action

You can want to do something incredible from now until the day you die. If you don’t take action to make it real, the idea will die with you.

  • Action makes it happen.
  • Action makes it real.
  • Action makes it.

So how do you make sure you consistently take action? In a word......

Focus

So what happens if you take action, but lack the focus to keep churning day after day?

At some point, your idea will cease to move forward.

Focus is what helps you take action—no matter how small or large—consistently and continually.

Focus is knowing what you want, and making sure you are going after it day after day…week after week…month after month…and—if necessary—year after year.

And, in the center of all of this is the one thing that should never be dismissed.

Intention

  1. Know what you want.
  2. Picture what it looks like.
  3. Make it an indelible image in your brain...even physically on a page or a screen.
  4. Go back to it. All. The. Time.

Knowing what you want and picturing success keeps intentions at the forefront.

I know. Picturing success may sound like a bunch of mumbo jumbo to you. I get it…

It reminds me a lot of "The Secret," that self-help book from years ago that, in short, says to think about the very things that you want, and you'll get them.

“Oh! Just picture what you want and you’ll get it!”

If you really believe you'll get something simply by picturing it, you miss the point.

So what IS the point?

How can you know what you want if you cannot visualize what achieving it will mean?

Visualizing success—in other words, Intention—should be at the core of every dream you have…that is…if you want to make it real. Make Intention the driver.

And, break it down further…what does success mean for each step you must take to get there?

  • Know what it looks like.
  • Understand it can change...and that's OK.
  • Map it out and take the steps needed to make it happen.

So you say you wanna do something great.

  • Start a company?
  • Write a book?
  • Open a Bagel Burger chain?

Awesome.

Get to it.

Love this, Zach Messler! The fact that we are framing it in the “do something great” terms makes me think of everything differently. Thanks for putting this out!

This is an awesome post about making things happen! My favorite mic drop quote is: "Go back to it. All. The. Time."
