How Do I Stop My Dog Being Crazy When I Come Home?
Bruce Edwards
Have had many excellent professional work experiences. Now enjoying retirement!
Some of us may still remember the old TV shows like Father Knows Best, Make Room for Daddy, or Leave It to Beaver where Dad comes home from a long day at work and the entire family greets him. It is always a great family moment, and everyone is happy with the results. Dad gets a hug and kisses and the family greet Dad after being gone all day.
So, what is the deal with our dog? Why, when we come home and he greets us, it always seems to end up in our pushing him away or even yelling at him? We love our dog, sometimes even more than our (human) family members.
The first, and most obvious difference between the two situations is what we can easily observe. If we tune into Father Knows Best, when Jim (the dad) comes home, Bud, Betty, and Kathy greet him and then they go off to their other activities. Margaret (Mrs. Anderson, the loving wife) will greet him and then tend to her duties or ask him what he may need. Things move on and the house takes on a new dynamic of “Father being home”.
When we come home to our loving dog, he jumps on us and wants tons of attention. We may immediately give it to him, but he doesn’t stop asking for more. Even though we may have things to do or haven’t even put down out keys or briefcase, he wants all our attention now. He has things for us to do now.
Robin and I have a great dog training article that goes into the differences in the dynamics of these two events. We can help you understand what is really happening and how you can successfully manage the unique situations.
