How do I set goals?

My Success Partners, whether they are Founders of startups or Coaching Partners, know that I love goals – and I take them very seriously.
Simply because, I don’t think anything will get done without them. And what doesn’t get scheduled, doesn’t get done (unless you’re Superman/woman of course)
Here’s how I set goals, how I track them and what resources I find to be most useful.
1)??? The BIG Goals: these are the overarching “to be achieved” checklist. Let’s say, the overall objective - example finding a new job, relocating or building a business. Those need to be built with caution, so they motivate you, but don’t frustrate you. only things we REALLY want to achieve –get put on this list.
2)??? The Milestones: this takes the BIG Goals and breaks them into time tranches, that lead towards achieving the BIG goals. Example, if I want to start a business (with no previous experience), then I need to educate myself – that takes 3-6 months for instance, I need to engage with the community, 3 months, I need to establish a network 3 months, I need to brainstorm an idea 12 months and so on
3)??? The Mini goals: these are the most fun, and the ones with the immediate rewards. You set them monthly, and then set daily ones. Here you’re focused on the nearest “Milestone” that is servicing the BIG Goal – get my flow? Example: this month, you’d be reaching the best places to get your startup education, and daily, you define now many you need to research to be able to strike this goal out.
The most rewarding part of the experience is checking out the to-do. It’s epically fun (for me) and it blasts a ton of dopamine in your brain.
Tools to help you schedule:
·??I love my mini goals to be on a notepad, but I’m old-school.
·??Microsoft to-do is POWERFUL and fun, and you can download the app on your phone and your PC to have it updated all the time when items are done
·??Asana is lovely, and it’s good if you have goals that are set alongside other stakeholders/team members and Trello works the same way if you’re working on a project etc.
Is it easy?
Yes and No.
Yes, because setting this up is straightforward and no, because sticking to it is a bit challenging. But really if you do this for 3 months straight, it becomes to you what it is for me – “business as usual”
Hope you found this useful, in anyway. If you have tips or tricks for me, let me know!

4 个月I am among those who successfully tried and applied this approach. Setting goals is not important since anyone can set goals; what matters is how you go about setting them. I appreciate how you took it seriously and made things simple, GS.
We’ve seen plenty of our success partners set goals, and achieve them this year - very valid points ????????

4 个月Excellent and well put-together Noorhan! My only concern is that setting goals for oneself could be the easy bit, having contingency plans when others do their utmost to undermine your goals is the other bit that you need to be thinking about. Fact is that in this dog-eat-dog world of ours, whilst you as Super-Person will have the best intentions for your own growth etc, in the Marvel (or DC)!) universe we live in, there will be a villain planning your downfall given half the chance! In short, do your goals but just like pilots when they start their take off roll, have in mind the contingency plan if you have to abort your take-off - should that goal not come to fruition. Sorry, just wanted to add my 2 bits of uplifting advice on this very positive article from you :)
