How do I really want to live?
Patrick Morley says in the book “Man in the Mirror”,
“Pounding in the breast of every man is an intense desire to lead a significant life. A man’s most innate need is to find meaning and purpose. It is the underlying motivator of our behavior. It is what brings us joy, pleasure, peace, and contentment. How many times have you said or felt …
I want my life to count — to make a difference!
I want to make a contribution in the lives of people around me.
I want to be useful, to do something with my life.”
This is the way I want to live. I suppose that I am not on this earth to see how important I can become, but rather to see how much of a difference I can make in the lives of people and serve them. I want to be someone who makes things better, to be that person who helps others reach the top of their mountain, to help them succeed. Actually, it seems like it could be a lot of fun to help others win, instead of winning myself.
I now know that significance does not come from status or a hood ornament on your car or a logo on your shirt. Significance does not come from a bigger salary or being a VIP. Significance seems like it can actually be a stumbling block to serving. Serving comes when you start thinking about other people more than yourself – when you truly surrender and start giving your life away – to others. You cannot be selfish and serve at the same time.
“I want my life to count — to make a difference!
I want to make a contribution in the lives of people around me.
I want to be useful, to do something with my life.”
