HOW DO I LAND MY DREAM JOB? KEEP IT SIMPLE!

HOW DO I LAND MY DREAM JOB? KEEP IT SIMPLE!

You are looking for a job and you want to impress the people who are hiring. So, following the traditional approach, you prepare a resume starting with a description of yourself. You put everything into it, even the kitchen sink, in an effort to impress others. It probably looks something like this:

"Talent Development professional with strategic and consultative experience in aligning people and business goals; liaison for field, global, home and regional offices; organizational design and effectiveness; talent life-cycle development; diversity and inclusion; identifying performance gaps, root cause analysis and planning solutions; employee branding; retention; career and employee development; new hire/leader orientation; project management; strategy planning and execution; staff collaboration at all levels within matrixed organizations; managing priorities and concurrent deliverables; influence with and without authority; and talent and learning agendas. Excellent analytical, business acumen, decision making, communication, facilitation, conflict, negotiation, interpersonal, organizational, problem solving, and presentation skills."

There are 100 words in two sentences. It takes 65 seconds to say.

There is a lot of corporate speak. There are many multi-syllabic words.

All of which makes it hard to read. People probably quit reading after 30-40 words.

If it’s hard to read. If people quit reading. Then, it cannot impress anyone.

So, how do you impress those hiring people?

YOU IMPRESS HIRING PEOPLE BY APPLYING 6-3-6.

Remember the first 6 of 6-3-6 is 6 seconds - the amount of time it takes for someone to make a first impression.

You have 6 seconds, that’s right 6 seconds, to impress those hiring people.

Albert Einstein once observed: “If you can’t explain it SIMPLY, you don’t understand it well enough.”

He got what 6 means: Keep It Simple.

Steve Jobs, known for championing elegant designs, once commented: “Simple can be harder than complex; you have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple.”

He got what 6 means: Keep It Simple.

So, it is clear that part of being simple is to be brief.

Much can be said in 6 seconds. But, it does require hard work as Steve Jobs commented to make a statement that says what you want and that it says it in the least amount of words.

Let me offer some examples. What about this marketing person who described themself as:

"I ELEVATE EVERYTHING.

BRANDING.

MARKETING.

DESIGN."

6 simple words that are easy to read. It takes only 3 seconds to say.

It says what he accomplishes and how he does it.

This person has applied 6 seconds in an effective way.

This marketing person gets what 6 means: Keep It Simple.

Now consider this social services executive, who describes herself as follows:

"I FIGHT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO FIGHT FOR THE PEOPLE."

10 impactful, simple words. It takes only 4 seconds to say.

It says what she does and who she helps.

This person has also applied 6 seconds in an effective way.

This social services executive gets what 6 means: Keep It Simple.

Let’s consider this senior operations and logistics executive, who describes himself as:

"QUITE SIMPLY, I MAKE THE IMPOSSIBLE HAPPEN."

7 words that are said in less than 4 seconds.

These words state what he has accomplished in the past and what he can accomplish for a future employer.

This person has also applied 6 seconds in an effective way.

This senior operations executive gets what 6 means: Keep It Simple.

Finally, let’s consider this CEO level candidate who describes himself as:

"I LEAD ENTERPRISES TO GROW FROM GOOD TO GREAT."

9 words that are said in 5 seconds.

They tell prospective employers what he has done and that he can do that for the next employer.

This person has also applied 6 seconds in an effective way.

This CEO candidate gets what 6 means: Keep It Simple.

So, what should you do to land your dream job?

Keep It Simple.

Why?

To Land Your Dream Job, Keep It Simple.
