HOW DO I LAND MY DREAM JOB? KEEP IT SIMPLE!
You are looking for a job and you want to impress the people who are hiring. So, following the traditional approach, you prepare a resume starting with a description of yourself. You put everything into it, even the kitchen sink, in an effort to impress others. It probably looks something like this:
"Talent Development professional with strategic and consultative experience in aligning people and business goals; liaison for field, global, home and regional offices; organizational design and effectiveness; talent life-cycle development; diversity and inclusion; identifying performance gaps, root cause analysis and planning solutions; employee branding; retention; career and employee development; new hire/leader orientation; project management; strategy planning and execution; staff collaboration at all levels within matrixed organizations; managing priorities and concurrent deliverables; influence with and without authority; and talent and learning agendas. Excellent analytical, business acumen, decision making, communication, facilitation, conflict, negotiation, interpersonal, organizational, problem solving, and presentation skills."
There are 100 words in two sentences. It takes 65 seconds to say.
There is a lot of corporate speak. There are many multi-syllabic words.
All of which makes it hard to read. People probably quit reading after 30-40 words.
If it’s hard to read. If people quit reading. Then, it cannot impress anyone.
So, how do you impress those hiring people?
YOU IMPRESS HIRING PEOPLE BY APPLYING 6-3-6.
Remember the first 6 of 6-3-6 is 6 seconds - the amount of time it takes for someone to make a first impression.
You have 6 seconds, that’s right 6 seconds, to impress those hiring people.
Albert Einstein once observed: “If you can’t explain it SIMPLY, you don’t understand it well enough.”
He got what 6 means: Keep It Simple.
Steve Jobs, known for championing elegant designs, once commented: “Simple can be harder than complex; you have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple.”
He got what 6 means: Keep It Simple.
So, it is clear that part of being simple is to be brief.
Much can be said in 6 seconds. But, it does require hard work as Steve Jobs commented to make a statement that says what you want and that it says it in the least amount of words.
Let me offer some examples. What about this marketing person who described themself as:
