How Do I Know If I Have Social Anxiety?

First and foremost, I’m not a doctor or psychologist.

I would be cautious about fully trusting what you read or hear on the internet about your own sense of self without any degree of personalization or individualized solutions.?

Keeping that in mind, I write on this topic because?I faced it in my personal life.

I faced over?10 years of social anxiety?until I had a series of serious life events that forced me to gain awareness and change my life, and I’ve been on this journey for the last 6 years since...

I faced what I would describe as an?invisible mental prison, which gave me anxiety when interacting with people, going to work or school, starting conversations, making eye contact, and really doing?anything in front of others.?

It got to the point where this impacted me so much to where I wasn’t living my own life. I was living a life that my social anxiety would be happy to live in,?but not me.?

A Great Analogy

Imagine there’s 2 goldfish swimming in a fishbowl.

Fish 1:?Hey how’s the temperature of the water today?

Fish 2:?Wait, what’s water?

Water is a substance that fish are engulfed in 360 degrees surrounded by at all times…

And yet it’s invisible.

And yet, if a fish tries to leave the fishbowl, the water restricts the fish, making it unable to move, leave, jump, etc.?

Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” ― C.G. Jung

How Does Social Anxiety Feel?

Mayo Clinic?reports the signs and symptoms:

  • Fear of situations in which you may be judged
  • Worrying about embarrassing or humiliating yourself
  • Intense fear of interacting or talking with strangers
  • Fear that others will notice that you look anxious
  • Fear of physical symptoms that may cause you embarrassment, such as blushing, sweating, trembling, or having a shaky voice
  • Avoiding doing things or speaking to people out of fear of embarrassment
  • Avoiding situations where you might be the center of attention
  • Having anxiety in anticipation of a feared activity or event
  • Enduring a social situation with intense fear or anxiety
  • Spending time after a social situation analyzing your performance and identifying flaws in your interactions
  • Expecting the worst possible consequences from a negative experience during a social situation

If you are identifying with most of these phrases, especially on a regular basis, you may experience social anxiety.

COVID WARNING

We are unsure of the current effects of quarantine due to COVID. If you are someone, who has only recently experienced social anxiety, please keep in mind, getting shy occasionally for the first time going out is normal vs this happening all the time.

Social Anxiety Isn’t Random

Nobody wakes up one day and says “hey I think I caught social anxiety last night!”

Oftentimes, social anxiety can be traced back to a divergent impactful moment or two at the age of 9 - 13 where it seems like you retreat back in your shell like a turtle.

Many times, people with social anxiety, maybe a bit on the introvert or shy side early on, and then face an experience like?bullying, discrimination, moving schools, and?family conflicts?that shift their mental health unknowingly to them.?

It’s common there’s a memory gap or a lack in your recall of what happened. This is because emotional trauma can be troubling to our system, so our minds would rather forget than try to recall what happened. Especially when it comes to social anxiety, there’s a component of hiding, or not speaking up, or never sharing to anybody no matter what.?

So, what can you do about it??

Bad News:?there is no magic guaranteed overnight cure.?

Good News:?there is a proven, scientific, and sustainable path you can take to heal, grow, and become your true self in front of others.?

Will it be easy? No.

Will it be hard? At times yes.?

But what’s even harder? Living life with social anxiety :/?

The earlier and more proactive you start the better, because conflict delayed, is conflict multiplied.

Personally me, through years of work I’ve been able to manage my social anxiety from it 100% of the time controlling my life to now just?5-10% on any given day.?

Please check out my resources like podcasts, articles, and?program?to learn more about this…

But generally speaking here are the?main foundations to start:?

  • Nutrition
  • Sleep
  • Exercise
  • Sunlight
  • Meditation
  • Exposure Therapy
  • Mind Hacks
