While people in American and European countries eagerly wait for summer, the scenario in many Asian countries is different. The scorching heat of the sun and extremely hot weather create unpleasant situations there. Also, hot blows of air increase the difficulties.?
I am from India, born and raised there. Also, now, I work as a remote worker from my home in India. People in India often need to think about diverse techniques to cope with the hot summer. Except for the people in extreme North and northeast India, everybody else goes through this situation. I am also no different.?
Cold water, cool beverages, desserts like ice cream and so on- we try various ideas to beat the summer. However, keeping our rooms cool is a tough task amidst all these summer hazards.
Although AC is an easy way for it, I do not prefer it. Air conditioners may give you temporary relief from the heat, but in the long run, it is a headache. It causes environmental damage along with many health issues.
I am not comfortable with staying in an air-conditioned space for a long time. So, I often opt for natural cooling techniques for my home in summer. Thanks to my profession as an interior design writer, I often get help of some experienced interior designer friends in my connections. I found some amazing ways to keep my room cool even when the outside is extremely hot with the sun above our heads.?
However, these techniques can be useful too in other areas except Asian countries. You can use them whenever you find the sun and outside heat disturbing your room’s ambiance. So, in this 4th edition of WRITER at HOME!, I’ll share how do I keep my room cool during the hot summer.?
Let’s see what those techniques are.?
Close the Curtains:
First of all, I like to buy summer-friendly curtains. No, not the fancy ones! It is better to use cotton curtains. Also, the color of the curtains must be light. Linen curtains are also great ideas as they are airy and comfortable. For extreme heat, I prefer thick polyester or microfiber curtains to block the sunlight from outside.?
Place Some Indoor Plants:
Indoor plants like peace lilies, snake plants, rubber plants, etc. are ideal companions at home for summer days. Also, herbal plants including mint leaves, aloevera are good choices for indoor plants.
They are useful in many ways during summer days. Placing leafy plants at home corners helps to improve the atmosphere inside the home. I have some amazing houseplants at my home. Click here to see them.?
Keep the Room Dark:
I prefer to turn on as little light as possible during the daytime. It keeps my room cool and pleasant. However, as a remote worker, I must work from my room, so maintaining no light is not possible.
In such a scenario, I have found a way out. I use a sleek, beautiful table lamp. Instead of turning on the lights in my room, I turn on the table lamp while keeping the rest of the room dark. Thus, I enjoy working in a cool ambiance.?

Ensure Enough Circulation:?
Open windows and ventilators are a must for air circulation inside rooms. I keep the windows open from early morning to late morning until the heat starts to come inside.
Also, after the sun sets, when cooler breezes start blowing, I again slide the curtains away and let the air enter through open windows. The rest of the time, the curtains are closed.?
Use Clean and Summer-friendly Bedsheets:
Bedsheets are a significant part of Indian households. Unlike the usual white bedsheets that you often see in American homes, we in India use bedsheets of diverse colors, patterns and types. And these bedsheets play a vital role in handling summer heat as well.
Interior design experts suggest using cotton, lightweight bedsheets on summer days. Cotton bedsheets can absorb your sweat, giving you a comfortable feel. For prints, I prefer to go for simple floral prints. Also, I find changing bedsheets once a week and maintaining cleanliness on it helps to keep a cool atmosphere inside the room.?
Grow a Rooftop Garden:
You can see diverse techniques to use rooftops to beat the summer heat in Indian households. While some paint the roof with white color, some keep wet hay across the rooftop. All of them are good ways indeed to reflect the heat and sunlight away from the house.
However, I like to get help from plants for this matter. A rooftop garden with diverse plants reduces the temperature of the roof surface. Overall, it provides shade from the sun and cools the atmosphere. Also, it insulates the home.?
Opt for Cool Lighting Options:
Lighting is a crucial factor in a home, especially in summer. So, I choose to stay away from hot incandescent bulbs or other similar lighting options that create extreme heat inside the home.
Modern LED lights or fluorescent lights are the best options for summer days. However, many other lighting ideas, like accent lighting and island lights, are coming up these days. So, it is best to talk to a professional interior designer before planning your home’s lighting setup for summer days.?
Final Words:
Enough plants around and inside the home and some other eco-friendly ideas are the best ways to beat summer heat at home. We must focus on preserving our ecosystem not only in summer but also on other days of the year. Thus, we can ensure an exhaustion-less summer every year.
Also, as renowned interior designer Sonika Khurana Sethi says, interior design hacks like installing under-deck insulation panels before a false ceiling, placing awnings in your balconies, fixing air leaks in all doors and windows, etc., can ensure relief on summer days.?
So, that’s all for today! See you in the next edition of WRITER at HOME!?
