How do I find my life purpose?

How do I find my life purpose?

It's time to talk about life purpose and its relationship with procrastination & productivity.

The topic of life purpose has come up a lot this week in my conversation with audiences and clients. Below are the two most frequently asked questions. They are the ones I've asked myself on more than one occasion and perhaps you are asking yourself them too.

How do I know what my life purpose is? How will I find my life purpose?

In my experience, both questions have a similar answer which is simple, but not necessarily easy. Let's tackle them both one at a time.

How do I know what my life purpose is?

It's hard to know what you want to do with your life when you have limited experience of things, therefore the simplest way to discover your life purpose is to live your life and try lots of different things.*

In the 'olden days' trying lots of things used to make you seem flighty and unreliable, but in this day and age, it's seen as a sign of strength. It takes more courage to try something and walk away from it (if it doesn't light you up) than it does to keep giving it a go in the hope things will get better. If you know you know.

*CAVEAT - Learning how to try new things is a skill, the difference between 'I don't want to do it' ego and 'I don't enjoy doing' it intuition is a self-awareness game that improves with time. In most cases, it will take you longer than a day to know if something is right for you, equally it might not, every situation is different. In my experience, it takes me around 4-6 weeks to fully know.

How do I find my life purpose?

Finding your life purpose is a lifelong journey. There will be days when you feel like you've got it, you love what you do and it feels aligned. Then there will be days when your priorities change and it will no longer feel aligned.

Like the answer to the previous question, finding and knowing are personal, they are also circumstance driven and are allowed to change over time.

Purpose, Procrastination & Productivity

What does purpose have in common with procrastination and productivity?

Procrastination proceeds purpose_Productivity follows purpose

Until you allow yourself the chance to go on the journey to find your life purpose and discover what it is you enjoy doing, you are going to procrastinate.

Once you've identified what it is you enjoy doing then productivity comes naturally, 'time flies when you're having fun.'

Here's 5 questions to journal on:

  1. What do I enjoy doing that I could do for hours?
  2. What do I love doing?
  3. What do others tell me I am good at?
  4. What would you like your business/career/life to look like in 1 year's time?
  5. What would you do today if you weren't worried about what other people think?

There's no magic pill to purpose

At times 'looking for your purpose' will feel like the most frustrating thing in the world...

  • The faster you accept that the journey is the destination,
  • That you will learn everything need to know by living your life.

EVERYTHING in your life will fall into place!

A book that helped me find peace with the journey is called The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho , have you read it?

See you next week

Her 888 Formula is a great concept to ensure that we reflect on what is serving us to support productivity and fulfilment. On her recommendation, I ran a time audit on my week and was able to reduce the areas that were not serving me and ramp up the ones that were. Leading to more prospect engagement, sales and greater peace of mind to know that I have a clear structure in my life. Thank you, Abigail and I look forward to working with you more in the future." "Abigail Barnes and her 888 formula gave me one of the biggest 'ah-ha' moments that I have had in recent years. As an event producer and owner of a speaker bureau, that doesn't happen very often, but Abigail's story connected and resonated, not just with me but with every audience we put her in front of. I have worked with Abigail since 2020 on various events that we have run and we always get high scores for her in our feedback. I have also guested on a couple of her shows. Abigail is always an absolute pleasure to work with, is popular with our audiences and her messaging is quite literally life-changing. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her." Lucy Brazier

"Abigail is a professional, thoughtful, skilled, genuine and results-focused consultant. I have collaborated with Abigail at speaking engagements, on podcasts, workshop creation and consultancy. I would now also call her a friend and trusted advisor. Her dedication to driving people's awareness of time and the value of it is inspiring." Melissa Curran
