How do I determine if a company's mission aligns with my values?
Dear 22-year-old me
Picture this: you're at the dreaded crossroads, staring at a sign that reads, "Career" and "Values." And there's this nagging question tugging at you like a persistent thought: "How the heck do I figure out if a company's mission aligns with my own values? and should I even care?" It's not just about punching in from 9 to 5; it's about finding that balance between what you stand for and what the company shouts from the rooftops.
Why should I care?
But wait, I am not the company, so why do I care what values or mission they put up? if they pay me I'm happy right?? well, that depends on your own values and mission in life. I believe we are on a mission to an eternal “why” the reason why we do what we do, and it's different for everyone. I think it's worth taking the time to check if the “vehicle” you are in is going to get you there.
What's the point of values anyway?
Values matter because they serve as the compass that guides our actions, shapes our decisions, and defines our sense of purpose and identity. They are the fundamental principles and beliefs that influence how we view the world, interact with others, and navigate the challenges and opportunities life presents.
Think of it like this: Imagine your values as the compass guiding your ship through the vast sea of opportunities. One of the first steps is to clarify your own values. What truly matters to you? Is it environmental sustainability, social justice, work-life balance, innovation, or something else entirely? By having a crystal-clear understanding of your values, you can embark on a mission alignment that resonates deeply with your inner compass, which will inevitably draw you closer to that healthy work environment we all desperately need.

How do I determine if my goals align with my company?
Now, let's talk about that mission statement companies plaster all over their websites. If a company's mission and goals align even remotely with your beliefs, then you are most likely to find yourself in an energized environment. It's like the company's résumé/CV, but you're the one doing the interview.
What's the core message they are conveying with their mission? Does it align with your value playlist? But hold up, it's not just about fancy words; it's about whether they're actually walking the talk. A company's mission should be more than just a catchy phrase; it should be the real deal, woven into its culture, actions, and goals.
But don't just rely on the company's highlight reel. Unearth their backstory, check out the founders and leaders. What ignited their spark? Is it a fire that burns like yours? and if it is an older company, does that fire still exist? Are they in it for the long haul or just trying to ride the trend?
Reach out to current or past employees; they're like the backstage pass to the company's culture. Do they rave about the mission, or is it just a bunch of fancy words? Their insider stories could spill the beans on whether it's a genuine value match or just smoke and mirrors.
All of these things will naturally lead to a work environment where you feel a strong sense of purpose. This really helps in creating a workplace where you believe your work is meaningful. In the end, that's what most of us want – to feel like the work we do actually matters.
