How Do I Create Real Value in My Business?

Creating real value in a business is a skill in itself. Many entrepreneurs get into business with the aim of building personal wealth, but that is easier said than done. The day-to-day realities of running a business often get in the way of key developments - like growth and scale - which would create real, tangible value. So, what can you do to give those areas the attention they deserve?
In my industry, recruitment, I have known many exceptional entrepreneurs. But, despite their brilliance in many areas, they struggle to maximise the value of their business. I have seen entrepreneurs who are outstanding at dealing with clients and candidates and who are exceptional at billing, but who were unable to grow the value of their business in a meaningful way. That’s because it requires a very different skill set to take a company from 10-50 fee-earning consultants than it does to grow it from 0-10.
So, what separates the most successful entrepreneurs – who have created real value in their businesses – from the rest? In my experience, most if not all have had great mentors. They worked closely with someone who had a track record in their industry and the expertise to help them progress towards their specific goals.
That’s why I’m currently looking for one or two exceptional people whom I can mentor in the recruitment sector. I want to work with people with a clear plan and vision to scale, and with the objective of realising that value in the future. You should be an owner, manager or director, and the business should have at least 10 fee-earning recruitment consultants. In addition, the business must have traded for a minimum of three years. The business can be either permanent or contract, but you must have a strong training and development culture. Finally, you must be in a market where you can demonstrate real demand with a growing and expanding customer base, both nationally and internationally. The business must also be a true sector specialist.
