How Do They Do It?!?
This morning, I "taught" back to back sessions for the entire faculty and staff at the Rosedale Technical College in-service day. Two takeaways: (1) I loved it, and (2) it's mentally and physically draining to teach!
I spent most of my time with each group doing a fun exercise designed to help us indentify and clarify the kinds of values and personal character traits we need to see in any new hire coming into our organization. I started with the prompt, "Who are the 3 coworkers that you would like to clone so that you could work with more people just like them?" And, then we created a long list of the traits our favorite coworkers demonstrated before whittling down the list to a small group of prioritized adjectives. (Note: I found this exercise in the book called "Traction" by Gino Wickman.)
Then we talked about our strategic goals of how we will continue to succeed in the future. Then, depending on the group, we discussed: how to ask for referrals, and what it means when I say "I'd rather have to say whoa than giddy-up."
A few members of the team remarked that they enjoyed the session, so I was glad to hear that feedback. I think it's very important for us to have these kinds of training sessions on a regular basis, and I am grateful for those who gave up their normal Friday off to attend.
But I've got to say, it's draining to be in front of a class! I was spent afterwards. I don't know how our instructors do it every day with our students. I'm so thankful and appreciative of our fabulous faculty here, and I know our students feel the same way. Thank you to all the teachers out there!
