How do bypass diodes work?

The role of bypass diodes


Situation 1:The crystalline silicon solar panel is made by connecting solar cells in series. During use, as long as one solar cell breaks and fails to generate electricity, it will affect the entire solar panel, resulting in a reduction in output power. Bypass diodes have the function of making up for the structural shortcomings of solar panels.


Situation 2:Solar cells whose output power is greatly reduced become resistors. The series circuit of solar cells will hardly pass current as a whole. In order to prevent the output power from decreasing, the solar panel divides the solar cells into multiple groups. When there are solar cells that are difficult to pass current, the group including the solar cells is bypassed, and the solar cells in the remaining groups can continue to transmit power. The bypass diode is responsible for this detour function.


Situation 3:When the solar panel is blocked by shadows, the output power of solar cells in the shaded parts will be greatly reduced. In this case, the bypass diode bypasses the subgroup whose power generation is greatly reduced.
