Over the last few years, I have had the opportunity to meet several corporate leaders at industry conferences and they all talk about the business development-related challenges and difficulties in winning clients at the marketplace despite having a technically sound team. They seem to be unable to generate leads and revenue needed to help the team thrive.
With my experience doing extensive marketplace research and handling business development activities, I have been able to arrive at a 7-step framework that can help address this problem and handle the Go-To market activities better.
- Identify the problem statement: Winning clients is possible only by offering solutions to their pressing problems. The bigger the problem you solve, the bigger the revenue that is possible. Therefore, it is critical to understand the marketplace and the competitor environment well. The articulation of the problem statement is where all the business development activity begins. When we decide to reach the market, we need to start with a focus on the niche where there are fewer competitors in the market. We can always upsell for other solutions. However, the unique selling point that defines your pitch should be something different that strikes the key pain point of your potential client.
- Create High-Quality Products: Creating offerings and solutions to the problem statements leveraging advanced technology that is novel and innovative is always your best bet. Creating a prototype sample that speaks for your diligence and excellence is the way to win over clients for further rounds of discussion. By constant refinement based on feedback, your pitches can get better and effective.
- Build Great Teams:? By investing in continuous training and development of the team members, you can create a team that is highly skilled and able to meet the challenges the engagement execution might face. It is equally important to have a leadership team that is inspiring and able to create an ecosystem of collaboration and recognition at the workplace. In most cases, the lack of communication leads to office politics, which quickly erodes trust and the team suffers. Team building activities can eliminate such challenges and the rewards and recognition program can help amplify the team members’ achievements to motivate them perform better.
- Outreach To Prospects: We need to clearly identify the target prospects and their profile, to be able to create a customized and segmented plan to engage with them. By utilizing data analytics, we can narrow down the target market further and outreach with personalized campaigns. It is also critical to attend all the industry events and conferences where the potential prospects hang out, to begin a working relationship that can last a long time.
- Building Visibility: An online presence with an appealing website, podcasts, and other social media content that offers a sneak peek into the case studies and success stories creates the possibility of strategic partnerships and collaboration opportunities. By leveraging content for authority-building and marketing campaigns, the possibilities are endless.
- Prioritizing Value:? Selling need not be a one-time affair. By prioritizing consistent value delivery, clients can stay with you for a long time. Creating personalized wow moments during engagements and maintaining good relationship etiquette can go a long way in making the short-term affair into a long-term marriage. ??
- Building an entrepreneurial mindset: Business is always a game of probabilities and setbacks are inevitable. There could be some regulatory changes and a competitive landscape that can fundamentally affect your business prospects. Therefore, it is important to maintain a positive mindset with an entrepreneurial bent of mind that recognizes new opportunities when they arrive, which can help you sail through challenges.
