How to Dispose of Biodegradable Waste?

What’s biodegradable products?

Biodegradable products are made of biodegradable materials, which are substances that decompose easily through the actions of bacteria, fungi, and other living organisms. Biodegradable substances usually include the substances found in day-to-day usage, for instance, food refuse, tree leaves, and grass clippings. Plant materials are usually biodegradable materials, such as cotton.

Biodegradable materials can be easily handled. Most of the communities encourage other people to compost materials and then further utilize them as an organic-rich material in soil, termed as humus. Therefore, gardening is encouraged. This process is known as composting. The biodegradable materials classification is as below.

How to properly dispose of biodegradable products?

First of all, biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes should be discarded in different bins to ensure:

-Separate collection and dealing

-Effective treatment and disposal.

-Prevent the formation of toxic compounds on their mixing

-Prevent emission and pollution in the environment.

After correctly distinguishing between the two wastes, we can start to deal with them separately. Non-biodegradable waste is preferred for recycling, if available. Recycling means reprocessing a used material into a new product. Our daily products are made of different kinds of plastics which can be separated through various mechanical processes (sorting) in recycling plants. The separated plastics can be reused for new products after processing (remelting or granulation).

For biodegradable products, they can be collected and composted through biowaste collection. After processing (organic recycling), the biowaste can be used either directly as compost or for biogas plants as renewable energy. If you are not sure whether a product can be collected with your local biowaste collection or not, check if it has one of the following labels. These two labels guarantee a European norm, which means that certified products can be composted in the majority of composting plants in the EU.

Composting reduces methane emissions and returns organic carbon to the soil. Composting is mainly divided into two scenarios: industrial composting, and home composting.?Industrial composting conditions mainly differ from home composting conditions based on temperature (industrial is ~122°F while home is ~82°F).
