How to Dispel Myths About the Cloud

How to Dispel Myths About the Cloud

Our consultants run into myths that hold people back from moving to the cloud. Below are the five most common myths and how to deal with them.

Myth #1: Security and compliance are big problems.

Dispelling the Myth: Show the investments cloud providers have made in these areas. Include the lists of security certifications and the number of security professionals working for the cloud providers. Few self-managed data centers can show comparable levels.

Myth #2: There are no cost advantages.

Dispelling the Myth: Demonstrate the massive scale and buying power of cloud providers. Educate finance executives on the total cost of ownership (TCO), including capital expenditures. Use pricing tools from cloud vendors to contrast with current costs. Consider building a full business case using publicly available tools.

Myth #3: Migration is too hard or too expensive.

Dispelling the Myth: Find eager learners and move sample workloads. Let them educate their peers. Show how long-term cost savings make up for the migration costs. Also, many clients use this as an opportunity to sunset legacy applications for additional savings.

Myth #4: Variable costs are too difficult to project.

Dispelling the Myth: Model the costs for workloads that are easy to understand. Show how chargebacks will be clearer. Set limits on scaling to avoid overruns. Demonstrate ways to harvest savings once you migrate.

Myth #5: Vendor lock-in makes future moves difficult.

Dispelling the Myth: All solutions have some degree of lock-in. Show how application design standards can ease portability. Show benefits of new services which are unavailable until after you migrate.

Agree Jared - would also add speed (to market, dev processes, change management) and flexibility (to bring infrastructure online or offline on demand) to add weight to the cost discussion.

My favorite is #3. We see teams that are stuck in "analysis paralysis" for far too long. The best way to get things moving is to get your hands dirty and start moving sample workloads. If you try and plan before trying things out, there are a lot of unknowns that will be missed.
