How to Discover Accomplishments You Didn’t Know You Had

As we exit 2021 many of us may pause to reflect on the year that was, and the year ahead. You may ask yourself, what have I accomplished? Ask me and I am well …ummmm….

2021 however did have a phrase that kept coming up for me: ‘getting comfortable with being uncomfortable'. For those around me, you may have even heard me say it.

As I enter 2022, the word courage comes to me. Courage, by definition, is the choice and willingness to confront agony, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. So the discomfort theme continues…sigh..

This led me to consider when in my life have I used courage? I don’t feel particularly brave or courageous, not by any means. I feel downright fearful about many things – failure, not being good enough, letting people down, and not having enough in retirement to name a few.

So… I began to take stock of my life and asked myself the question: When in my life have I needed courage? It led me to an impressive list that made me perhaps, for the first time in my life, step back and go, that’s not too shabby.

My list included, solo world travels, buying businesses, facing financial ruin, and moving hemispheres to name a few.

Seldom have I stopped to think about what my biggest accomplishments are. In fact, I would struggle to think I am accomplished at all. Maybe you feel the same. You may have had that job interview where they ask what your biggest accomplishment is? Well, me … I would be like …. ummmm….

Creating this list, however, makes me feel a little proud of myself. I have challenged myself in ways that made me uncomfortable. Ways that stretched me to see what I am capable of. I know my journey is not yet done, but maybe you, like me, find it hard to think about anything you have accomplished. Instead, make a list of times when you needed courage and used it. Maybe you could be as surprised as I was.
