How Disconnecting Enhances Our Lives and Leadership

How Disconnecting Enhances Our Lives and Leadership

In today's hyper-connected world, the constant buzz of notifications and the relentless glow of screens can easily overshadow the peaceful rustle of leaves and the calls of the wild.

Making a choice to disconnect from digital distractions and immerse in nature for a period of time is not just a luxury, but a necessity for your mental health and overall well-being.

That’s why I am making this empowered choice for myself. I'll be travelling the incredible Northern Territory and immersing myself in everything it has to offer.

Recent research, including a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research, supports this approach, showing that just 20 minutes in a park setting can significantly improve mood and lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. This data highlights the impact that even brief periods spent in nature can have on our psychological state.

The benefits of this disconnection extend beyond my personal rejuvenation; they also serve as a powerful form of role modeling. By openly prioritising my mental health and taking breaks, I'm sending a crucial message that it's not only acceptable to pause—it's beneficial.

This stance can help shift workplace cultures and societal norms toward more sustainable practices and enhanced mental health awareness.

Anne Lamott wisely noted, "Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you."

This simple yet poignant reminder highlights the effectiveness of stepping back to recharge. By choosing to disconnect, I'm not shirking my responsibilities; instead, I'm ensuring that I return to them with greater clarity, energy, and commitment.

Moreover, choosing to unplug helps to dispel the myth that the world rests solely on our shoulders. The truth is, the world will continue to spin, businesses will still run, and life will go on, even when we take a step back.

This realisation can alleviate the undue pressure we often place on ourselves, enhancing our decision-making and creativity when we return.

I am confident in the foundations and momentum that have been built in my business, which allows me the space to make these choices.

Ultimately, choosing to disconnect and immerse myself in nature is not an act of escapism but one of empowerment. It fosters mental health, rejuvenates my spirit, and teaches others the importance of self-care.

By demonstrating that it's possible to take a break without everything falling apart, I not only enhance my own life but also empower others to do the same. It's ultimately about setting a precedent that health and well-being are priorities worth pursuing.

Wouldn’t you agree?

Julie I'm so enjoying your book, I love your concept of "pushing the pause button". It feels counter intuitive and yet it is so essential.
