How to be a director: #15 Have a plan

Lesson #15: Arrive with a plan in hand
On your first day reporting for duty as a director you must arrive on the job with a plan. Nothing elaborate. Nothing complex. Nothing that will overwhelm anyone.
So what do you provide?
Something simple.
Present a simple written single page plan.
If you are so inclined, draw out a picture plan (stick figures are fine) for your first staff meeting that illustrates where you see the team going together. Include a few simple expectations.
It is critically important to answer the unspoken “Now what?” that hangs in their minds and over their heads.
Ask questions like, “How do you want to contribute to our success?” and “What do you do best?”
At this point, you want your team happy, a bit relaxed and ready to receive the good word from you; their new leader.
Be cautious not to unintentionally create an environment that leads to building up walls.
Seek out the productive and inclusive vibe. Tap into it.
Extraordinary kindness has the power to work miracles.
Approach this first gathering with compassion.
Share the plan and map it out for them. It’s a tool in your bag that you can use to invite their participation and support.
A plan in the hand is more valuable than mere words in the air.
