How To Be A Director #14 First Takes
Lesson #14: Practice Your Next First Impression
May 2, 2018 / Diane Dahlmann
They say that first impressions count and that you don’t get another chance to make a good first impression. In many regards, that is true.
But what if we consider the idea that in some ways life and work give us a series of first impression opportunities?
Not second impressions, really, but a number of successive fresh starts that present the chance to deepen an introduction, a glance or a brief encounter.
Traditional interviews are rife with these sorts of on-the-surface meetings. After the interview, the next time you see a successful candidate is on their first day of work. Time passes. Impressions and recollections fade (yikes!) So to that end, your opportunity to make another “first impression” lives.
One of the best places to make that next first impression is when you gather your new team to meet with you on your first day. A director should select the opening words for that meeting with care and practice them out loud beforehand.
Opening words delivered by you at the first meeting with the staff start your administration as their leader.
This is your second first impression.
The words should show strength and confidence.
Nothing over the top.
You can share a clear vision.
Nothing should frighten them.
Your expectations should have an inclusive tone.
You need an optimistic opening that will inspire and motivate them.
Make the most of this opportunity.
#It’s a bright new day and another chance to make a positive first impression.
