How To Direct Message Your LinkedIn Connections Without Being Salesy or Spammy

How To Direct Message Your LinkedIn Connections Without Being Salesy or Spammy

There’s been a lot of concern over recent months that direct messages are not as effective on LinkedIn as they used to be.

Yet having tested out a number of different direct messaging strategies myself and with clients over recent months, I have found that direct messaging your ideal clients is still incredibly effective in generating appointments and clients.

What has shifted with direct messaging?

The main shift with direct messaging has been to CUSTOMISE your direct messages to the person you are sending the message to rather than sending a TEMPLATED direct message that is the same to everyone.

In addition the way we view direct messages has changed from looking to get an appointment booked in right away to instead using the direct messages to ?nurturing a relation with your ideal client/ new LinkedIn Connection.

How many messages should you have in your direct message sequence?

I still recommend as a starting point that you’ll want to use a 2-step direct message sequence...

How can you customise your Connection Request?

When you are requesting to connect with an ideal client, I recommend you customise your message and focus on the person you are connecting with (or alternatively don’t send a message at all). Remember you only have 300 words for this message.

Here's an example of how to customise your connection request:

Dear [enter name],

I am interested in the fact you {enter something personal about the person that interests you e.g. studied at x university, are working in x industry etc..},

I look forward to connecting with you on Linkedin,

Your name

How can you start a conversation with your new LinkedIn Connection

Once your ideal client has accepted your connection request you might then want to nurture a relationship with them before seeing if they have the problems that would mean they would benefit from having a call with you to discuss working with you.

Here are 7 ways you can start a conversation naturally with your new LinkedIn Connection:

What if you still want to use templated follow up direct message?

If you want to use a templated direct message to get appointments booked in (where you are sending the same message to all your new LinkedIn connections) then you need to simply be very clear niche that you are targeting.

Use the filters in Sales Navigator to make sure you drill down and target your ideal clients with precision, and also make sure your audience recognise the value of connecting further with you.

For instance, one of my clients recently sent just 146 direct messages to her existing connections, and immediately got 8 appointments booked in. This is a very high conversion rate.

Why her templated direct message worked is because she has a very focused audience and niche, and she has a strong background and reputation within the sector she is targeting.

Here’s an example of a templated follow up message that will get appointments booked in:

Hi [Enter name],

Thank you for accepting my connection request.

Typically, [job titles] come to me because they are [emotion 1] with [pain 1]. Some are [emotion 2] with [pain 2]. I don’t suppose any of this sounds familiar?

If it does, I would love to have a call with you to get to know more about your situation and share some strategies that will help you (enter solution)

When are you available for a chat?

Kind regards,

Your name
