How Did We Get Here?

When I went to college I had a plan. I was going to be a news anchor, I was going to make a difference for my community and that was it until September 11th happened. I was on the air, giving the report of the Twin Towers through tears and began to think I had made a mistake. In my gut I knew I couldn't be the bearer of bad news for the rest of my life but I had an $80,000 degree that said you better. So I went on a journey, while raising a family which is really what I wanted for my life to waiting tables to customer service to selling humans for a security company to direct sales to technology sales. All with a degree in broadcast communications. One could look at the path with a lot of question marks and confusion. I used to carry a lot of guilt and sometimes still do around not knowing my calling earlier and following the path I think God set out for me from the beginning but ignored. However, what I've learned is that in every path I took I was gaining experience, getting wisdom and being groomed for what was next. Do I think I could have had some realizations around my unique gifts and talents that could have helped me with more clarity and intentional career decisions...yes but I live with no regrets. I believe it's NEVER too late. I believed that I had failed over and over again because I could never find my work "home" and never felt like I was a good fit. The place where I felt like I was truly valued and could make a difference. A place where when things got tough, it was worth working through. A place where they didn't take for granted the fact that you are tying your own personal brand to the business and taking the risk right alongside of the company.

I've never been more thankful to have a career in tech sales where I get to be a part of business strategy and helping to architect solid technology solutions for organization to succeed and thrive. I have had some of the most amazing professional growth experiences inside of the companies I've worked for like Verizon. It's stressful, it's hard at times and I know it's worth it. The relationships I have gain on this journey have been fruitful and priceless. I mean I got to hang with Jamie Fox for crying out loud! I am both thankful and grateful for every part of my journey.

One of the things I wish I had learned earlier in life is to not tie my identity to my work. That begins with core value work. What do you value and why does it matter to you? Then you begin to align who you are with what matters to you. I put way too much emphasis on who "I" was in my work instead of just "being" who I am at work and letting work just be a part of what I do. I wanted to intertwine the two and make them one. Once I realized MY brand matters and that it's like a hierarchy with me at the top and then all the things I'm about under that, I was set FREE! The clarity was unreal and it just made me better at ALL the things I did in life. One of the greatest things I ever did was know my unique gifts and talents, understand my core values and then begin to align my life with this things. I am a Worthy, Abundant and Powerful leader whose core values are Love, Courage, Connection, Generosity, Community and Authenticity. What are you about?
