How did we ever survive without mobile phones?

Were we really more organised?

First call of the week, a planned maintenance call to an existing customer to carry out some work to their fire exits. Fairly gentle start to the day, welcome cuppa to settle the dust, fire exits crash bars serviced and tested, few adjustments. Even a surprise appearance of the sun, always welcome on a January morning. All seems wonderful with the world......Then the phone rings....

53 miles later a site inspection to a well known national bakers who have issues with their flooring. Now some things I just can't do and this is one of them. The cleanliness requirments of the client dictate that a hot pour seal is required to the floor, I'm just not insured for this as I'm rarely asked to provide this service, but I know a man who can, so one phone call later and the job is in hand.

Whilst organising these works that sleek black screen fires into life again I'm off 52 miles down the road to my next damsel in distress. A raised carpet trim causing a trip hazard at a shopping centre. Not a massive job, but it has the potential to cause a huge problem. A picture sent to my phone by the client gives me enough information to be able to pick up a new trim on the way, saving a bit of time. Simple enough job, remove old trim, clean the area up, remove the traffic debris underneath it and cut and fit the new trim, with more fixings at the edges to prevent a repeat performance.

Text message from a regular client, broken toilet flush. Straight there on the way back towards home. Pick up a new syphon on the way back. Easily installed and tested. Chance to enjoy a cuppa with the shop manager, known him years, always a good catch-up. Plus the benefit of booking in his PAT testing whilst there.

Arrive home after a 12 hour day....Just a little bit hungry.

So there we are, a quiet start to the week, massively influenced by the mobile phone. No amount of organisation could have taken the place of my mobile, these clients all needed quick service and we all were winners. Even after 12 hours my phone is still right by my side, just like my business. Because when you've got a maintenance issue you need someone right by your side.

Have a good week everyone
