CLIMATE HEADLINES & NEWS PICKS

What's caught our eye this week??

?? - British road sign washes up 600km away in?Denmark?

Talking about roadworks near my home in Grimsby isn't normally what would make the EcoSend newsletter.?

But here we are, as a road sign advertising works on Corporation Bridge?washed up on a beach ?in West Jutland, Denmark some?600km?away this week.?

The sign was discovered?during a?'There's?No Planet?B'?beach?clean,?by students from Denmark, Portugal, Greece and Turkey.?

In all fairness, they did offer to send it back to us?although?they noted it was?‘a?bit rusty’.?

This is a lesson?for us all about the impact of dropping anything into our rivers, especially waste that really shouldn't be there.?Even one small bit of rubbish can end up on a journey thousands of miles away, creating endless pollution for everyone.?

There’s?one googly-eyed fellow from Baltimore who?wouldn’t?have allowed that to happen. He's also celebrating a milestone birthday this week. Keep reading to find out who!?

? - Wet wipes to be banned?

Responsible for 93% of all blocked sewers and one of the most common types of waste found during beach clean ups, wet wipes?are finally?going to?be banned ?in the UK. That is, wet wipes containing plastic?which?break down into microplastics and are harmful to human health as well as ecosystems.?

While we definitely welcome this, we also wonder what took them so long??

?? - New buildings in England now required to deliver a 10% biodiversity net gain?

An announcement?was recently made?that developers of new build homes and commercial buildings must do more to promote biodiversity. The Government has now put?minimum standards in place ?requiring?a 10% biodiversity net gain to?be achieved on all?new planning applications.?

?? - Unilever sparks ESG debate?

After retracting some of its sustainability goals,?Unliver’s?commitment to the climate ?has?been called?into question. Notably, the company has scaled back on its plan to reduce the use of plastics.?

LOWERING YOUR DIGITAL CARBON FOOTPRINT ??

Your online activity has a carbon footprint?

As we've learned here at EcoSend as?the world's first sustainable email platform — the concept of carbon emissions created by our digital activities is new to all of us.?

So it always helps to learn from others about how to address your digital-based emissions, especially as a business.? These are some top picks to check out this week:?

Halo by Design has written an extremely insightful post , titled?‘How and why to stop the digital bloat that even B Corps don't seem to know about’.?

One of the points that caught our attention was that in the future, 谷歌 could apply ranking penalties to websites that have heavy carbon footprints, as part of their sustainability policies.?

A special?shout out?also goes to Tim Frick at Mightybytes, Certified B Corp who led a fantastic webinar this week on digital sustainability, including how to use?Ecograder ?to test and adapt your website, so that it emits less CO?.?

Do you own one of the 2.96 million websites that currently use Squarespace ?

Then this?one's?for you!?

By using?EcoSend Forms ?to capture leads on your website,?we’ll?plant trees on your behalf. Of course, none of that can be possible unless you know how to place a form on your site.

Not to worry, as Chris W. is here to help with his recent YouTube tutorial, where?he’ll?show you?how to add your EcoSend Form to Squarespace ?in just a few clicks.?

If you find?Chris’s?tutorial helpful,?be sure?to?subscribe, like, and hit that notification bell.

You can also eat a sandwich if you fancy.?That's because with our drag and drop form builder, you don't have to skip lunch to figure it out, as you'll be done in just a couple of minutes!?

Let us know in the comments about any other videos?you'd?like us to make to help you get the most out of EcoSend or email marketing in general.?

Wait, why do I need an email form on my website? ??

Having a visible form on your website can help your business in endless ways.?

Forms allow you to collect leads rather than letting users leave your website for good.?This?means your email list will benefit from a steady stream of new?subscribers, who are more likely to open and engage with your?campaigns. ??

What does all of this equal for your business??

Improved ROI?from email marketing. ??

With email generating $8.5bn in global sales (and numbers rising year on year), there has never been a better time to make sure you are capturing every single subscriber possible.?

This includes the subscribers you capture with EcoSend Forms! ??

MR TRASH WHEEL TURNS 10! ?? ??

Many happy returns to?Mr Trash Wheel , Baltimore’s trash wheel interceptor who just celebrated his tenth birthday.? There's a fascinating tale about where this city's most famous attraction all began.?

Baltimore resident John Kellett would often cross the bridge over Baltimore Inner Harbour on his way to work, where he would see the likes of plastic bottles and carrier bags flowing past. The trash wasn't being thrown directly into the water, rather it was being carried by rainfall through the city’s drains, where it would flow into the river. Eventually, the trash would make its way into the Atlantic Ocean.?

Most people would just walk on by and ignore the problem, but not John who wanted to do something about it. So he called the mayor’s office and?pitched an idea ?for Mr Trash Wheel which he had quickly drawn on a napkin. The city loved the idea so much that Mr Trash Wheel became a permanent fixture in the harbour, where he has remained to this day.?

Mr Trash Wheel, commissioned by Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore , has so far gobbled up over 5.2 million pounds (2,600 tons) worth of plastic waste and other discarded items from Baltimore's waterways.?

Last weekend, a special event called ‘A Night At The Trashseum ’ was held to mark his ten years of service. Baltimore residents even donned googly eye outfits in his honour, and wore accessories made from recycled trash.? John is also a great example of how each of us can make a positive contribution to the environmental problems we see all around us, just by caring enough to actually do something about it.

#EcoSend Quote

“If it can’t be reduced, reused, repaired, rebuilt, refurbished, refinished, resold, recycled or composted, then it should be restricted, designed or removed from production.”
