His son, Dharampal Gulati, fondly called 'Mahashay', left school at the tender age of 10 to assist in the family business. The partition of India in 1947 forced the Gulati family to leave their homeland. After a brief stay in a refugee camp in Amritsar, they relocated to Delhi. To make ends meet, Dharampal initially operated a tonga (horse-drawn carriage) in the bustling streets of Delhi. However, his passion for spices soon led him back to his roots. He set up a small shop in Karol Bagh, reviving the "Mahashian Di Hatti" name.

In 1959, he acquired land in Kirti Nagar to establish a spice factory, marking MDH's transition from a local shop to a manufacturing powerhouse. Dharampal Gulati became the face of MDH, featuring prominently in advertisements with his distinctive turban, twinkling eyes, and warm smile. In 2019, his contributions to the industry were recognized with the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award.
