ChatGPT goes to school

Why is ChatGPT so useful and versatile? If it is a kid, how did its parent, OpenAI, raise and educate it?

ChatGPT is a versatile and useful language model developed by OpenAI. It was trained using various methods to become a skilled communicator and problem solver.

First, like a child in elementary school, ChatGPT learned to read and write by reading and writing millions of books and billions of web pages. (It is tempting to make my daughters read 1%!) This pre-training allowed it to memorize a vast amount of information and develop its grammar and factual knowledge. Its ability to complete sentences and paragraphs based on partial input is similar to the auto-complete feature in word processing software.?

Next, in middle school, ChatGPT was taught how to behave and respond to instructions through instruction tuning. This allowed it to generate text that follows instructions, much like a human would.

In college, ChatGPT learned how to code by reading millions of scripts on public repositories like GitHub. This allowed it to understand and generate code, as well as reason and think logically.?

Finally, to fine-tune its abilities and develop its capacity for long-term memory, ChatGPT was trained using reinforcement learning with human feedback. This involved having real people write questions and responses, which were used to train the model. This step was crucial in developing ChatGPT's impressive capabilities, such as its ability to provide long, informative responses and maintain impartiality.

OpenAI has carefully trained and educated ChatGPT to be a knowledgeable and responsible virtual assistant. In December 2022, at the tender age of 3, ChatGPT goes to work. ?For the first time in human history, everyone, not just the top 1%, can hire an assistant. One million people did so just in the first 5 days, as its advanced capabilities only costs $0.002 a day.

The future potential of ChatGPT and other language models is exciting to contemplate. If OpenAI can teach it this much in three years, what else is in store in 10 years? Go ask someone smart. Try ChatGPT?

How much of it is attributable to "self learning"? ( know it is pouring over information content on its own) But does it modify its "replies" based on its own "correction" of what it knew before?

#very useful for people who are not coders.
