How did reading 100 books positively impact my life?
Christian Claudio, MBA
CEO, StaffMed Health Partners | Physician & Therapy Recruiting Firm | Author & Avid Reader | Christ Follower
I began 2018 with a goal to complete 100 books. Challenged Completed. And I must tell you that the whole experience was absolutely amazing!
My reasoning behind this challenge was simple, to grow beyond my current perspective of the world and thus expand my knowledge as I become a more effective leader. As I stated in my previous article, 3 Tips on How to Slay the "100 Books" Challenge, reading just one book can give you up to two years worth of knowledge, 100 books would load me up with over 200 years of experience in just 12 months. Not a bad deal.
“We are the sum total of our experiences. Those experiences – be they positive or negative – make us the person we are, at any given point in our lives. And, like a flowing river, those same experiences, and those yet to come, continue to influence and reshape the person we are, and the person we become. None of us are the same as we were yesterday, nor will be tomorrow.” - B.J. Neblett
Major Takeaways
Still I describe this experience as being amazing but I have to ask myself what exactly made it so? If the experience was truly incredible, wouldn't that imply that the exercise had a profound effect on me? And then wouldn't that be worth explaining? So I will attempt to answer the question, How did reading 100 books in one year positively effect my life?
Here were my two main takeaways:
Mental Toughness Cannot be Understood by Reading Alone
True story, I really wanted to learn more about mental toughness yet I didn't consider the best way to learn this was by completing tough goals. Don't get me wrong, I love taking on challenges, waking up early, getting a workout in before most people wake up, compete head to head with other recruiting teams and do it all while spending quality time with my family. But learning about Wim Hof, who is a man who believes in pushing his body and mind to the edge of endurance, like when he climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro wearing nothing but a pair of running shorts and sneakers in 28 hours or David Goggins, who completed in more than 60 ultra-marathons – many of them involving running more than 100 miles – and holds the Guinness World Record for pull-ups, having completed 4,030 in 17 hours, set the bar at a completely different level. These guys and many others I read about never learned of mental toughness in a book. They live it, every day. "If it doesn't suck, I don't do it" mentality of life. Why? It is their edge that cuts through life. No moment is wasted.
So I too am "embracing the suck". I have chosen to do at least one thing daily that is physically and mentally hard pushing myself way past my normal limits. Comfort zone is not your friend. There is no growth in the comfort zone. Thank you Jesse Itzler for introducing us to David Goggins and Scott Carney for introducing us to Wim Hof.
Great Leaders Have 3 Traits in Common - Self-Awareness, Leading from the Front and are Highly Productive
Leaders have High Levels of Self-Awareness - Having self-awareness is key in order to properly balance your team with offsetting strengths and weakness. Self-awareness also helps leaders maintain emotionally intelligence and allows leaders to remain calm under pressure. The best way to develop positive self-awareness is to focus on the good, the wins, and the gains your team has made through each challenge and to also acknowledge what was learned through the painful trials. And lastly to be exceptional, I learned to be grateful for all of it. Humble fearlessness is the result.
Leaders Lead from the Front - this means leading by example. For example, demanding unreasonable standards from your team without being able to uphold these standards yourself is not an effective leader. A common complaint that recruiters have is that their production managers have no idea how much work they have to do, so a great leader will take the time to get to know their day-to-day struggles and help find ways to make things easier. Leaders must be responsible and take complete ownership. This will build deeper trust with your team and allow you to provide the "wins" each team member is looking for. This means earning their trust rather than demanding it, dig for the gold in each individual team member, building a sense of vitality while being empathetic to any situations that may arise.
Leaders Produce Extraordinary Results - Yes, its true that more times than not, a great leader within a sales environment usually has a high producing team. While company metrics are important, great leaders are able to reduce staff turnover by keeping the team motivated, develop the team by inspiring them with training and create a healthy and happy place to work by consistently working the culture as it is measured by the team's "Why" and its core values. All of this adds up to incredible results for a recruiting company. Lastly, Great leaders know that nothing would be achievable without the collective production of the team. It’s through working together that amazing things can happen. And always push to ensure your top producers are rewarded for their hard work and are recognized for the team's overall success.
I Must Thank The Authors and the Leaders They Wrote About
Overall, my 2018 was filled with stories of exceptional people who have extraordinary accomplishments. The historical figures that I had a chance to learn about further was Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, William Wilberforce, Eric Liddell, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jackie Robinson, Charles Colson, Ernest Shackleton, Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Winston Churchill.
I also had a chance to learn from more modern day leaders such as Peter Drucker, Spencer Johnson, Charlie Munger, Eugene O'Kelley, and Coach Wooden.
Lastly, I was honored to have been taught by such world changers like John Maxwell, Chris Voss, Simmon Sinek, Greg McKeown, Gary Vaynerchuk, Jim Collins, Tony Robbins, Andy Andrews, Joshua Medcalf, Mitch Albom, Jon Gordon, Bob Goff, Jocko Willink, Patrick Lencioni, David Schwartz, Brian Houston, Tim Grover, Danny McDaniel, Jesse Tevelow, Jesse Itzler, Tim Ferriss, Scott Carney and of course, Wim Hof and David Goggins. All these leaders became my mentors of sorts during this process.
And a very special thanks to my new friend and mentor, Don Yaeger. It was a great honor to recently work with you. Your guidance in developing Great Teams transcended the pages of your book and has firmly landed in my teams' hearts. We appreciate the time and attention you took with us and I look forward when our paths cross again. Keep in touch.
And of course, here is the complete list of books that was covered in 2018.

- Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action - START WITH WHY shows that the leaders who've had the greatest influence in the world all think, act, and communicate the same way -- and it's the opposite of what everyone else does. What does it mean to stand for honesty, courage, and charity, especially at times when the culture and the world run counter to those values? Each of the seven biographies represents the life of a man who experienced the struggles and challenges to be strong in the face of forces and circumstances that would have destroyed the resolve of lesser men. Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man's life. Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final “class”: lessons in how to live. - The Connection Algorithm: Take Risks, Defy the Status Quo, and Live Your Passions - Ever wish you could be a little more extraordinary? A little happier? A little more in control of your life? Well, this is your blueprint for making it happen. It might sound crazy, but it all starts with quitting your 9-5. Jesse should know. He quit his job to join TechStars, a startup accelerator that helped him and his business partner build a multimillion-dollar company from the ground up. Then he wrote this book while lounging at the beach. Sound impossible? It's not. This isn't just Jesse's story. It's the story of every successful person you've ever known - and all of them have followed the same formula. After nearly a decade of interviews and research, Jesse has compiled the ultimate playbook for defying the status quo, weaving together the most critical yet overlooked tips from industry heavy hitters like Ben Horowitz, Tim Ferriss, and Steve Jobs.
- What Doesn't Kill Us: How Freezing Water, Extreme Altitude, and Environmental Conditioning Will Renew Our Lost Evolutionary Strength - Investigative journalist and anthropologist Scott Carney takes up the challenge to find out: Can we hack our bodies and use the environment to stimulate our inner biology? Helping him in his search for the answers is Dutch fitness guru Wim Hof, whose ability to control his body temperature in extreme cold has sparked a whirlwind of scientific study. Carney also enlists input from an Army scientist, a world-famous surfer, the founders of an obstacle course race movement, and ordinary people who have documented how they have cured autoimmune diseases, lost weight, and reversed diabetes. In the process, he chronicles his own transformational journey as he pushes his body and mind to the edge of endurance, a quest that culminates in a record-bending, 28-hour climb to the snowy peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro wearing nothing but a pair of running shorts and sneakers.
- Tell It Well: Fuel Your Faith & Encourage Others with the Power of Your Story - YOUR STORY MATTERS. In today's culture, it is becoming evident that the person who tells the best story and captures the heart of the audience will have the greatest influence. As Christians-, we hold in our hearts the manuscript of the greatest true story ever told-the message of the Gospel. Additionally, God has given each of us our own stories of divine redemption and miraculous victories. Yet, far too often, we fail to articulate these God-moments to others with clarity and conviction. Our personal stories tend to get lost in the fog of poor communication and weak presentation. In this easy and engaging read, Luke Gajary combines personal stories with simple truths to fuel your faith and strengthen your resolve to tell your stories well for the sake of eternity.
- Living with a SEAL: 31 Days Training with the Toughest Man on the Planet - Entrepreneur Jesse Itzler will try almost anything. His life is about being bold and risky. So when Jesse felt himself drifting on autopilot, he hired a rather unconventional trainer to live with him for a month-an accomplished Navy SEAL widely considered to be "the toughest man on the planet"! LIVING WITH A SEAL is like a buddy movie if it starred the Fresh Prince of Bel- Air...and Rambo. Jesse is about as easy-going as you can get. SEAL is...not. Jesse and SEAL's escapades soon produce a great friendship, and Jesse gains much more than muscle. At turns hilarious and inspiring, LIVING WITH A SEAL ultimately shows you the benefits of stepping out of your comfort zone.
- Can't Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds - For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare - poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him The Fittest (Real) Man in America. In Can't Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40% of our capabilities. Goggins calls this The 40% Rule, and his story illuminates a path that anyone can follow to push past pain, demolish fear, and reach their full potential.
