How To Develop Skill of Writing User Stories

How To Develop Skill of Writing User Stories

Introduction:

The most obvious method that people adopt when it comes to learning how to write user stories is to attend a training course or do your own research. And based on that knowledge, you start to write user stories.

The problem with this approach of directly starting to write user stories is that user stories actually come at a later stage in the product life cycle.

First comes the product vision, product need, and the set of personas who will be using this product. So, even though there is nothing wrong with this approach, a more impactful approach would be something different, that we will discuss in this blog post.

Focus on the Intent:

The tactical approach to writing user stories would be writing sporadically without really understanding the product vision and the user persona.

Someone might take Facebook as an example and start writing user stories as a Facebook user. Someone might take an airline booking application and start writing user stories as a flight booking system user. But in this approach, the intent is missing. ?

Before writing user stories, one must first understand the product vision, the business model, its target segment, and the user personas.

Epic User Statement:

Once you have understood the user persona, user profile, and how to meet the user need, then you can convert it into an epic user statement.

Then, at a later stage, you can slice the user statement and convert it into user stories. We do have examples of WowHotels.

In the resources section of oguild.com , you can also find some sample user stories where user personas are also defined.

Need for User Stories :

The idea of user stories is to develop a product incrementally having the just-in-time conversation related to the requirement, focused on the value for the target customer.

So start looking at the product, the personas, the user roles, and then explore those requirements in small pieces incrementally.

?Work With Mentors:

When you write user stories, it is important that you understand the intent behind writing those user stories and you might need to take the help of mentors to get that intent right.

Since we are used to looking at things analytically, a mentor’s approach might train you to look at things more from a top-level where the user's perspective and needs are a top priority. Under the mentor’s guidance, you can write some draft user stories, get reviews, incorporate their feedback and improve your writing skills.

Conclusion:

As discussed above, writing user stories is not just about writing product scenarios but there has to be more depth in the writing process.

This requires you to look at and understand the product vision, the user roles, the user profiles, the user’s need for the product, the value this product adds to the target audience, etc.
