Every human tends to be master of their own destiny but negations on one of the key factors that drives human achievement cannot be spoken all, due to our limitations as human beings. Therefore, the reasons for writing is specifically to strengthen the common beliefs on developing self-discipline.

This article would be focusing on what is self-discipline? How to develop self-discipline and its possible benefits after its development as one of our mental skills.

To arrive at successes of any level in life, there are standards but not always recognized settings one should follow or adhere to, this is why you need to take your time in getting this article through.

 As an individual who holds a leadership position in my discipline, I looked up to several others especially those whom had been in same shoes before I did, to ensure I am been guided and thoroughly cooked for achievements in that same field, all this I did without acknowledging that my mindset need resourceful energy and flinch perseverance until I was stroked with not planning the right way, incessant behavioral changes and absence of long-term satisfactions and meaningful goals, certainly, “self-discipline” but I pulled through with;

What Is Self-Discipline?

Webster dictionary defines self-discipline as correction or regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement. It further went more to say self-discipline is synonymous to self-possession, self-mastery, self-control, will-power etc.

Self-discipline is the ability of motivating yourself and also the absence of human or external interference in your way of doing things, planning, thinking or even action. Of course! This does not mean staying away from establishing relationship with fellow humans or not seeking others ideas, opinions or reasoning for specific issues.

Definitely, being self-discipline does not mean compromising on your most important values, character and integrity or talking the talk without walking the walk instead, it’s one amongst the toolkit needed to achieve personal success, gaining a constructive mindset complimented with perfect and sole ideas with no range of limitation in consideration. Possessing the skill qualifies you to persist with your short or long term decisions and plans until you achieve them. It also express as an internal sturdiness or strength, assisting you to maneuver laziness, confusion, low-carb lifestyle, bad habits. Self-discipline saves you from the last minute panic and hassle. You become more focus with all your projects address and completed at the right time, leave you a fulfilled individual.

How To Develop Self-Discipline?

 No seedling is planted and bears fruits until it reaches it maturity stage, just as it processes are gradual and takes time, same concept is applicable to developing self-discipline as a skill. There are processes and methods to be considered, this is because it outward nature is strategic. Several activities we engage ourselves in daily as individual open up our habits owl, self-discipline is not a quality but a practice we ought and must not fail to keep learning without daily distraction because it take time in building, maintaining, and keeping up. It’s clear that many people don’t know how to develop their self-discipline.

You can begin with identifying your weakness, you can do this by thoroughly carrying out a self-research on your habits, write them out comprehensively and also attaching your strength on the list, then you can focus on your strength and using it has an advantage to your weaknesses, by so doing you would work on habit growth and improvement. In reality, this is often satisfying and highly rewarding but not easy to get, encourage yourself by considering the positive effects of your strength when fully activated. For those weaknesses you can’t work on, do well by flinging them off the window.

Learn to find motivation in your strength. After several self-skimming and research, there are results to be generated through the comprehensive list. Your strength is very important here, resolving to grow your strength. A fire does not stop burning if fuel is poured into it. See motivation as the fuel in your strength. There are several ways to be motivated; motivate yourself with things you feel it’s hard to achieve if you don’t apply self-discipline, maybe due to laziness, procrastination or other factors. This is more of reality than one can actually think.

Draft a schedule of your activities; of course, this isn’t sounding strange but it’s ok to be tracked on intending and on-going activities. This could help you focus more on what motivates you and it transparently becomes part of you. Most times, this can be affected but find better ways of getting rid of hindrances and stay more focus.

Adjust what you want for yourself, drafting a schedule is very easy but adherence to what is drafted then to culminate more efforts to get it all done as planned. But hey! You could create a change plan just as we know change is always the constant thing in life. This doesn’t warrant for careless efforts in ensuring your activities are done as been planned but instead, it’s creating an avenue for vital reassessment on how to achieve goal. So in order to breach the gap, just readjust your mind as it’s also a crucial process.

Participate in sporting activities, during sports activities, maybe a training, you would realize the strict attitude of coaches to ensure you don’t violate certain rules laid for that sport. This same process can help you get along with peers, gain mental stability and virtually enhance self-discipline.

Set SMARTER goals, set goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound, evaluate and revise. Such goals can help you change obstacles that stand in your way.

Make your results a reality; it is more rewarding to engage in a self-project and making it through, especially when much challenges had been encountered in the process of achieving set goals, instead, challenges serves as a reminder to all.

Merits Of Developing Self-Discipline

After several occurrences of working things out and ensuring the goals are achieve, the existence of its benefits are still enormous;

  • Power to stick to decisions of your own
  • Awakens your inner strength

 Self-discipline is needed in every aspect of life and also in circumstances, therefore, we need to control our habits to be self-disciplined as it goes a long way to also makes us better people.
