Feeling rusty in the job market but need to make a change? It's time to develop an industry-ready CV! But before you dive into templates, remember: there's no magic formula. What works in a tech start-up might not work for a construction firm. What you really need is to engage in targeted research.
- To further understand your target market:?Job boards,?LinkedIn groups,?industry news outlets are all sources or information.?Discover preferred CV formats,?buzzwords,?and even cover letter preferences.
- To get specific information:?Generic advice is nice,?but specific details massively increase your chances.?Hunt for industry-specific tips,?job role examples,?and even CV templates!?
- To learn about presentation styles:?Learn the industry's preferred style and font choices.?Studies show that it takes an average of 6-8 seconds initial scan for a hiring manager to decide whether to continue reading your application or not. You need to grab their attention.
Additional Research Information:
- A Reed study last year found that 64% of UK employers prefer concise,?one or two page CVs including bullet points and simple formatting. This doesn’t mean you need to stick to these rules as it’s not always applicable, but it gives a broad overview.
- Industry specifics:?For Project Managers, check professional bodies like APM or PMI for industry-specific CV guidance and resources.
- Location:?Research regional variations in CV preferences.?Local London companies might favour a different style than Manchester.
- Research saves time:?Finding industry-specific templates helps you focus on content,?not formatting battles.
- Targeted CVs get noticed:?Knowing what hiring managers want and expect increases your chances of landing an interview.
