Success has been a study for humans since time imperial. We have created an industry of success which is dedicated to helping us uncover the secrets of success and becoming successful people.
One of these secrets is self-discipline and control. However, it isn't as easy as it seems as you may already know. The road to success is packed with 2 deadly enemies: The path of least resistance and The expediency factor.
Let’s take a step back. What’s discipline? I believe it’s the ability to act on what we know should be done, the right way and at the right time. We all battle with indiscipline sometimes but those who succeed are those who overcome their own indiscipline and develop the habit of doing what must be done no matter what. It seems simple until you have a good experience with fighting it that you know it’s not as easy as it seems. In the following section, I’ll explain the two inhibitors of discipline. In the next sections, I’ll share how you can begin to create a life where you have the will to act on your deepest beliefs and desires.
The Path of Least Resistance.
The path of least Resistance is perhaps the most difficult to handle since natural reaction of all humans tend to flow toward the easy and fast. In this world where everything is moving fast, everyone is busy and trying to create a life of success for themselves, we can get overwhelmed by what we need to do. This leads us to naturally prefer the easy ways to do things in the fastest of ways. The parth of least Resistance captures this tendency of ours. The path of least Resistance says we are more likely to look for the easiest of ways to achieve what we want in the fastest of ways. This tendency has made lots of people victims of get rich schemes like Ponzi Schemes.
The Expediency Factor
When the path of least Resistance results in an entrenched habit of always looking for the easy and fast in any given situation, the expediency factor starts to work. It becomes a second nature habit to you and you act out without even thinking about it. Most people are in this stage. This is an extension and an even worse version of the path of least Resistance.
These states aren’t immortal and all the successful people who have lived on this earth since the start of it are proof to this fact. The question is, how did they do it? How did they achieve the big stunt of slaying the path of least Resistance and the expediency factor from their lives and move on to a achieve success. The following sections explain two chief ways they did and so can you too. You are more than capable of overcoming these two forces.
Take control of your life.
Taking control of your life is something you probably have been saying to yourself for some time now. When you look at the bigger it can either motivate you or intimidate you. But mostly looking at what your life could be if you simply put it together could be the kickstarter for a whole new life. As humans, we function better when we believe we are part of something big, a vision, dream or whatever you decide to call it. Start by not trying to do it all at once. That’s the recipe for disaster. Rather, focus on having goals and always making a point to focus on the next step and not the entire vision because in the now, you can only work at one thing which should be your current goal.
Think long term
Success is a game as is often said and the more you win the more you want to play. Also, success is a game of patience and not necessarily speed. Having the patience to work with the long term in mind will put you on the right track to success. After explaining his investment strategy to a newscaster, the presenter asked him why then isn’t everyone successful. Warren Buffet relied, “They don’t want to put in the time and work.“
As I already mentioned, humans work better when we operate within a larger vision where we feel a sense of contribution.
Your task is to figure out your mission, develop a vision out of it and essentially build small goals leading to the achievement of your grand vision. It may take years, decades or even another person to complete what you start but hey what’s life without meaning?
I explain these terms in detail in my YouTube video and give you counters to them: Control, vision, and long term thinking. Working with a goal system will enable you to achieve more than normal.
I hope you find it informative and life-changing.
