How to Design a Joy-Sparking Life and Career with the Marie Kondo Method

Marie Kondo's KonMari method has transformed many homes by tidying up spaces, but its principles go far beyond mere organization. Imagine if this transformative method could be applied not just to your physical surroundings but to your career, relationships, and, indeed, your entire life. What if you could "Marie Kondo" your existence, making conscious choices to keep only what truly sparks joy? That's exactly what I've done over the past several years. Here's how.

Applying the Marie Kondo Method to My Career and Relationships

As Marie Kondo says, "Keep only those things that speak to your heart. Then take the plunge and discard all the rest. By doing this, you can reset your life and embark on a new lifestyle." For me, this meant taking an honest look at my professional life and my relationships.

I found myself considering the people in my life and the jobs I held. Each interaction, each responsibility – did they give me energy, or did they drain me? When the latter was true, I had to make the tough call of limiting my exposure to those jobs and people or eliminating them from my life entirely. In practical terms, that meant that I quit jobs or stopped working with people I did not enjoy.?

This process wasn't easy. As Kondo reminds us, "Changing lifestyle habits acquired over many years is often extremely difficult." But, just as decluttering a house makes it feel airier, streamlining my relationships and career brought a newfound lightness. The people and jobs that remained were those that truly sparked joy. As Marie Kondo would say, "The objects you decide to keep, the ones that gave you the spark of joy? Treasure them from now on."

Lifestyle Design: Curating and Shaping Your Reality

Moving beyond the confines of a tidy home or streamlined career, the principles of the KonMari method can be applied broadly to every facet of our lives. Just as we choose what items to keep in our homes or what roles to maintain in our professional lives, we must also choose what experiences we pursue, whom we allow into our lives, and what information we consume. This conscious selection and rejection is the essence of curation, and it is a powerful tool in the art of lifestyle design.

Lifestyle design is about creating an existence that aligns with your most genuine self. It's about making choices that resonate with your unique needs, wants, and dreams. It's not a one-time exercise but an ongoing process of defining and refining. Curating our life's various aspects—our relationships, experiences, and knowledge—is a practical way of shaping this design.

Lifestyle Design for All

Is lifestyle design a luxury only the privileged ones can afford?

I believe everyone has the capacity to design their life, regardless of their circumstances. It's less about having limitless options and more about making intentional choices within our individual constraints. Like designing a house to fit a specific piece of land, we shape our lives according to our specific circumstances. Our life's "plot" could be large or small, but it's up to us to make the most of it. These constraints, instead of limiting us, can help us focus and choose what matters most.

Embracing the Journey of Lifestyle Design

Think of lifestyle design as a journey rather than a destination. It's about continuous assessment, adjustment, and curation, much like the essence of Marie Kondo's method. The KonMari method, after all, is more than just decluttering physical spaces; it's about refining our lives to amplify joy.

All of us have the power to curate our reality, regardless of where we find ourselves. With the KonMari method, I've learned to let go of what no longer serves me, making room for new experiences, relationships, and knowledge.

Now, it's your turn. Reflect on your life as it currently stands. Decide what truly sparks joy and what feels more like a burden. Apply the principles of the KonMari method and discard what no longer serves you. Start curating a life filled with experiences, relationships, and knowledge that truly inspire and energize you. It's time to design a life that genuinely "sparks joy."

Love this so much! I was just thinking the other day about how much "brain space" is full of useless worrying and trying to remember, and how if I could just clear my head, I'd be able to dedicate that neural activity to (hopefully) more productive and enjoyable mental work and outcomes. The term "lifestyle design" really resonates too, both for my career and for everything else I do. We only have so much time here on earth. This is a great reminder that we do have the ability to choose how we spend our thoughts/time.
