How to design Decentraland Scenes UX and UI
Scene MVP and the Prototype
Scene MVP is the abbreviation of Scene Minimum Viable Product. It is the first best impression of your virtual experience that you can make by the Decentraland SDK. It will be focused on the pipeline, team workflow and the basic user experience.
In order to share your scene MPV you should upload a scene preview to the server by sharing a link. The MPV is usually a single-player game. In the second release you can add interaction support or multiplayer options. The first mechanic and audio support can be added in the next releases and in the last one, the art pipeline will be finalised.
The factors which should be considered in the scene MPV are pipeline goals, player experience, the art and scene creation as well as the rendering of the art. You need to choose the tone, aesthetics and the camera facing sprites. When creating a prototype, you can consider a persistent core loop or game loop which drives the player actions and the game’s response to those. Transactional layers and the interfaces between systems can be integrated in the prototype as well. Blockchain updates or interfaced apps can be some examples.
Scene UX and UI
Before designing the user experience and user interface of the scenes, the objectives should be clarified. There are some specific design values in Decentraland which should be considered while creating a scene. Each scene should possess a welcoming banner which includes the title, The goal, the motivation for the player, the instructions, the next steps as well as the controls.(For example, press E to move left) using the global gaming buttons is appreciated. The scene should be enjoyable, fun and easy to learn. Patterns should be consistently used throughout the scene and reinventing the wheel should be avoided.
All the features in the scene such as the texts, motions and graphics should hint and lead players in the right direction. Considering clear action-reactions to the player’s input is a great idea. Being minimalistic is a value. It helps the players to focus on what matters. It is important to design the scene in a way to make it purposeful and make the player want to come back. The users can be challenged by being given something to achieve which requires several attempts. Multiplayer events can be a great socialising opportunity as well.
It should be considered by the designers that the default Decentraland user interface including the minimap and chat will cover the left 25% of the screen. Choosing a colour palate would be a great idea since it gives the scene an identity and signals hierarchies and relationships between elements.
Regarding the texts which will be integrated in the scenes, a three type scale should be defined for titles, subtitles and body. All font sizes must be 12 px or larger. Long texts should be avoided and using coloured solid regions as a layer between the text and images is suggested. Universal icons would make it easier for international players to find the right directions. Motion as well as particles, scale, or fading margins can be used to provide feedback, to lead the way and to stand out. If you are designing a game, make sure that your games fits into your LAND.
