How to Define Happiness

According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of happiness is a state of well-being and contentment. What does it mean to you? How do you define happiness??

As a Chief Happiness Officer, I get asked this question a lot. While the term happiness may mean something specific to you, happiness is multifaceted.??

Happiness:?

...is feeling satisfied and content with your life.??

...is the ratio between pleasant and unpleasant emotions.??

...is knowing your life has meaning and purpose.??

...includes experiencing life through new and different adventures?

Below are five strategies to incorporate the science of happiness into your life. They help you increase your well-being, which will help you be more successful in your career, parenting, marriage, health, and wellness.?

  1. Have a growth mindset. Know that you can continuously change and evolve for the better. You are never stuck. Your brain and body can continuously change.??
  2. See your emotions, especially the painful emotions, as information. Look at your emotions as life lessons, or teachers. When you are sad or experiencing pain, know that those feelings will not last forever. Learn from your emotions and ask yourself how you can grow from your experiences.??
  3. Lean into spirituality. This may be prayer or meditation. Use faith to help weather challenging times in your life. Sometimes, you cannot do everything on your own. Lean into spirituality and a higher power will help you get through tough and painful moments.??
  4. Relationships and human connections are especially important. To help you feel balanced, spend time with those you love, whether your family or your friends. Lean on those you care about, and those who care about you, as it will bring you happiness. Prioritize your relationships over your to-do list!??
  5. Spend time in nature. Go for a walk or run. Take the day to go on a hike or go swimming at the beach. Being in nature is critical to happiness and research shows that being near water increases your happiness and reduces stress levels.??
