Here’s why interior design with plants helps you grow joy, cultivate calm, weed anxiety…
I'm so pumped up to bring you this episode all about interior design principles for us houseplant lovers. Now, I'll be the first to admit—interior design does not come naturally to me at all. I'm all about the big picture and often miss out on those small details that really make a space come together.
That’s why I’m super excited to have my friend Betsy on the show. Betsy is the founder of Uploft Interiors and host of the Affordable Interior Design podcast. She has this amazing ability to break down interior design into simple, easy-to-follow rules and principles. And the best part is we're looking at all of this through the lens of plant parents like us!
Find Your Style
First off, you gotta find your own style. Look at rooms you love and figure out what catches your eye. Pick a style word (like bohemian) and an emotional word (like cozy). This helps you keep everything consistent. Are you more boho-chic or minimalist-modern? It’s all about making your space feel like you.
Next, choose an inspiration piece that has two or three colors from the rainbow (ROYGBIV). This could be anything from a rug to a piece of art. Place it somewhere you’ll always see it. This piece will help you pick the colors for the rest of the room.
Follow the 60-30-10 Rule
Here’s a cool trick: use the 60-30-10 rule. That means 60% of the room should be your main color, 30% should be a secondary color, and 10% should be an accent color. Your plants can be neutrals, which is awesome because they go with everything!

Balance Hard and Soft Elements
Mixing hard and soft elements makes your room look balanced and comfy. Think about pairing sleek, modern pots with fluffy throw pillows. This contrast makes your space feel inviting and stylish.
Nature doesn’t have hard lines, so try to use curves and organic shapes in your decor. This makes your room feel more natural and relaxing, which is perfect for a house filled with plants.
By using these tips, you can create a beautiful, plant-friendly space that’s totally you. The goal is to make your home a cozy, stylish place that brings joy with all your lovely plants.
