It is difficult to establish whether ineffectiveness in construction operations has improved or reduced over time, however, trends of resource shortage and people moving on from the industry say a great deal about the ineffective operational mindset. And it can depend on a variety of factors. Some potential drivers of changes in effectiveness could include advances in construction technology, improved project management practices, increased use of prefabrication and offsite manufacturing, and changes in the regulatory environment. More importantly, it is best summed up by Angelo Suntres, P.Eng in his post today:
It is common for different stakeholders in a construction project to have different aspirations and motivations. For example, the owner of the project may be focused on maximizing the value of their investment, while the contractor may be more concerned with completing the work efficiently and profitably.
To resolve these different aspirations and motivations, it is important to establish clear communication and collaboration among all stakeholders. This may involve holding regular meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and any issues that may arise, and working together to find solutions that meet the needs of all parties.
In addition, it can be helpful to establish a common goal for the project that all stakeholders can work towards. For example, the goal might be to complete the project on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. By focusing on this shared objective, it may be possible to align the different aspirations and motivations of the various stakeholders and move forward with a sense of common purpose.
Finally, it may be necessary to involve a mediator or neutral third party to help facilitate discussions and resolve any disputes that may arise. This could be a project manager, a construction lawyer, or another professional who is skilled in conflict resolution.
That being said, it is generally acknowledged that the construction industry has traditionally been prone to inefficiencies, and there is ongoing work being done to identify and address the root causes of these inefficiencies. For example, the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and other digital tools has the potential to improve communication and coordination among team members, which can help to reduce ineffectiveness. Similarly, the adoption of lean construction principles and practices can help to eliminate waste and improve efficiency.
Now, bringing about a fundamental shift in the construction industry can be a challenging process, as it involves changing the way things have been done in the past and adopting new practices and technologies. Some potential strategies for bringing about this type of shift might include:
