How to deal with Change?
If you are a human being, you have probably experienced suffering because of death, loss, or change. Even though sometimes it is possible to manage change, we cannot deny the emotional consequences it creates, even when we have prepared ourselves for a certain change that will happen in our lives.
The only constant in life is Change. Therefore, it makes sense to understand it, accept it, and even flow with it as much as we can, as fighting change is like going against the current of the ocean.
Wikipedia provides various definitions for change, just to mention a few:
·????????Impermanence, a difference in a state of affairs at different points in time
·????????Metamorphosis, or change, a biological process by which an animal physically develops after birth or hatching
·????????Social change, an alteration in the social order of a society
·???????Technological change, invention, innovation, and diffusion of technology
?With all these changes happening around us, even at the same time, the question is How do we learn to deal better with changes in our life? I have seen people and clients struggling with change, either at work because things get done differently than they would expect, or in their private sphere, when they experience loss or an important change in their lives.
Understanding how to manage change is probably one of the things that we should be focusing on if we want to attain more happiness and experience joy in our daily lives. Some of the best strategies to manage change I have read and practiced include:
1)???The acceptance that change is a part of life: Even though some people have serious issues understanding the positive aspects of change, it does indeed help to understand that sometimes things are just the way they are or should be, that there is a natural order of things and that we are part of a continuum that rather than fighting it is better to accept. In this way, we can also relax more and go more with the flow when we cannot control things.

2)???Let go: letting go people and situations of our lives is another aspect of change. One time a colleague told me her personal story in which she did not want to change her job because she enjoyed so much the company of her colleagues. What happened a few months after is that these colleagues move companies or positions, and she learned not to put this kind of criteria up front when choosing what is best for her.
?3)??Possibility to Grow: even if it might sound a bit hard, sometimes we just need to mature as human beings, and this is regardless how old we are. Changes bring a new dimension into our lives. We learn something new, we become more compassionate, we can help others with similar experiences, we ultimately grow. Sometimes it is extremely difficult to deal with a change in certain circumstances like the loss of a dear one; but if we focus on the idea that life is change, and more in helping others and ourselves then is no need to focus mainly in the pain and it becomes a bit easier to cope with changes. It does not really help anybody to be feeling always sad or with a lack of purpose.
?4)??Become more flexible: adapting and getting used to go out of our comfort zones for as much as it is possible, always brings lasting effects. I know we all have heard enough about the comfort zones and the advantages of moving out of this, but making this idea part of your lifestyle, a habit, part of yourself, will make any change easier, and make you also lighter and brighter.
One time I heard a teacher saying: “we tend to become likes monuments as we get older”. Even when that might sound like the regular situation, don’t do that. I know many people older than 60 practicing sports and feeling very healthy, so there is no need to make yourself heavy at any age.
Finally, give yourself the chance to live and enjoy. For as much as you can, understanding the concept of change will help you realize why things happen, the situations that are happening around us, and to relax. How you understand the idea of change and impermanence, will make wonders in terms of how you live your life, and enjoy your days.
