How To Deal With Being Fired

How To Deal With Being Fired

In 2001 I got sober. It was one month after the World Trade Center attacks. My office was a startup internet company called Career Engine. We were in the South Tower. The events of 9/11 led me to change my life in a positive way. Often something wonderful comes out of something horrible. I have been sober now for over 21 years, married for over 17, have two fantastic kids and founded The Harrison Rush Group almost 15 years ago. My life is beautiful, but it took something painful to get there.?

With job cuts and “RIFS” (I am so sick of that word) brewing across Wall Street many bankers are struggling. Those who enter the field of investment?banking typically are high performers, top of their class, perfectionists and used to success. It can be a humble time for some and fraught with anxiety, depression, and doubt. I am here to tell you that what seems like a curse may be a blessing. ?

In 2008 I authored a book called “How to Find a Job in a Bad Economy”. I sold twenty copies including 18 to my dad and two to myself. What I suggested to people then is like now:?

  1. Rely on your network: Not just your LinkedIn network but your true friendship network. The LinkedIn network is great to help you get a job, but your friends and family will pull you through the emotional strains brought about by job loss. Chances are you know a bunch of people who have been through what you are going through. There is courage in vulnerability. That is how we help each other. By being vulnerable we cultivate empathy and connection. When you are feeling anxious, depressed, or doubtful because of job loss you need connection. ?
  2. Reboot- For most bankers they have always “crushed it” and been that over achiever and Valedictorian. It is time to take a deep breath and do some soul searching. Do you really want to be a banker? Banking has its upside, but life is short and fleeting so follow your gut. Think back on your life and ask yourself what has given you the most joy and satisfaction? When was I happiest and what was I doing??
  3. Help Others- In my experience the best way to get out of my own head is to help others. Getting fired can be devasting to one's ego especially for those massive egos that go into banking. The best way to build self-esteem is to do kind and generous acts. The new job, the new title is great, but the confidence brought about by that is hollow. Helping others by giving one's time to another is a great cure for anxiety and depression/boredom. Think of being selfless as enlightened self-interest. ?
  4. Exercise & Meditation: Body/ Mind Spirit. When the body feels good the brain feels good. The positive effects of exercise and meditation are well documented. If you find your mind going down a dark path, go for a walk or do something physical. The adage “Move a muscle and change a thought” comes to mind.?

I hope this helps. I am not a therapist/social worker or mental health professional. The above worked for me and I hope they work for you. If not keep searching and I am happy to chat. Have a good day. ?

Well said Rago. The graph is interesting also. As we get older our associations change drastically. We used to look forward to jammed packed social weekends and felt sadness if we didnt have something stellar on a Friday night. Now I welcome a quiet Friday at home and a good nights sleep and feeling fresh on the weekends.
