How to deal with an aggressive boss ??

The 'Results' focus in company is higher than ever. As the Salaries of executives increased significantly, the bosses have been demanding short term results. With this, the tensions have been going up in the companies. The executives are becoming more and more aggressive in their approach to teams! This is not necessarily only at senior level. Bad practices get percolated easily! This behaviour is very much there at junior levels too.

I have been involved in establishing review systems at companies and this is the story from one such companies. Shankar is heading the Production planning and control of the company. He is a very calm person and in the review meetings with the senior people, he is very submissive. He presents his part, does not make any point in a firm manner. Says 'yes' to everything. I had been having a view of Shankar as a Passive person. But, during one of my shop floor visits, I saw Shankar interacting with his team members in his cabin. He was shouting at them at the top of his voice! On enquiry, I understood that Shankar is aggressive with his team members and also with some of the HODs. Shankar used to constantly complain about his boss and how his boss deals with him aggressively. But he is much more aggressive with his team members.


The other day, I met up with Annamalai who is the Vice President in a big company. I was coaching one of the General Managers of Annamalai. We had a meeting with Annamalai and his GM Pritam whom I was coaching. Annamalai was talking continuously in the meeting. He was not allowing Pritam to talk at all. Whenever Pritam started talking, Annamalai would hold up his hand asking Pritam to stop ! Pritam valiantly made attempt to talk a few times and every time he was flagged down by Annamalai. Annamalai expressed his opinion about Pritam very openly. He spoke about several improvement areas in Pritam and acknowledged one or two minor strengths of Pritam. Annamalai was explaining about Pritam in an aggressive manner. He was not diplomatic at all !!

This behaviour is increasingly the new normal !! How do we handle an aggressive boss ? Please look at this short video !!

I can confirm that team follows the leaders and if we want to inculcate collaborative culture in the team and company it should start from the leader of the team or company
