How David’s apprenticeship is helping him build a new future

After 14 years at Cadent, David Bradford found himself at a crossroads. He has worked across various roles in operations – emergency dispatch, resource management, unauthorised connections – but something was missing. He wanted a new challenge, a fresh direction.
“I had been trying to get into HR for a few years, and when the chance came up to not just join but also gain additional knowledge, it was too good to pass up.”
Now, David’s breaking the stigma that apprenticeships are just for school leavers but starting an apprenticeship in HR, proving that it’s never too late to learn something new and change career paths.
David’s career didn’t start in an office. Before joining Cadent, he was a site foreman in construction, managing teams and projects on the ground. Transitioning to an office environment was a big change, but one he embraced. Moving into HR has been an even bigger shift – this time, from being the person with all the answers to being the one asking the questions.
“My first really eye-opening moment was when I realised just how big HR is. We all think it’s just a couple of areas of work, but it’s a massive machine with a lot of moving parts that need to come together in just the right way.”
Despite the learning curve, David is thriving. Through his apprenticeship, he’s developing skills in team leadership and data analysis, both of which he sees as crucial for his future. His next goal? Moving into HRIS, where he can explore how data shapes decision making in the business.

“People will always need a way of proving what they say, and MI or KPIs will always be the way to do that. I think it’s vital to any businesses future to not only have these but develop how they’re used.”
But this journey isn’t just about professional growth, it’s had a huge impact on his personal wellbeing too. The support he’s received, particularly from his managers, has made all the difference. With encouragement to learn, grow, and take on new challenges, he’s looking ahead with confidence.
Over the next few years, David hopes to take on a managerial role, leading his own team and driving projects forward. His ultimate ambition? A senior HR leadership role where he can make a long-term impact.
His advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship – no matter their age or background?
“Do it!! The support is always there, and I honestly can’t recommend it enough – just be ready for the challenge.”
