Has it really been several decades? I recall the challenges even back then and the Innovations we applied which were revolutionary in their context but invoked fear in those of the Change Control world. The example I cite is the challenge of having to do development on MS sql server and apply all data and schema to an IBM database. Designing the application to scan the Microsoft schemas and data sets and convert them into a single executable web page was one of the Paramount requirements for deploying software that would modernize the organization while dealing with an internal software upgrade that had taken more than a decade and was still not even in beta. There's always risk involved in doing anything worthwhile. If anything the longevity of your organization stands as a monument to the correctness of the principles you operate under.
