How Dare You Post This Job Without the Salary!

In today’s workforce, transparency isn’t just a buzzword, it’s a baseline expectation. And yet, every day, we see job postings with beautifully crafted descriptions, enticing lists of responsibilities, and promises of “competitive benefits,” but absent is the one detail most crucial to candidates: the salary.

How dare you post this job without the salary!

This omission isn’t just frustrating; it’s disrespectful. For candidates, applying for a job is a significant investment of time and effort. They spend hours tailoring resumes, writing cover letters, preparing for interviews, and navigating the emotional rollercoaster of job hunting. To ask them to do all of that without providing a key piece of information one that will heavily influence whether they can even afford to accept the role is unfair.

“Competitive” is not a number. When employers hide behind vague phrases like “competitive salary,” it feels like an attempt to dodge accountability. Competitive compared to what? The industry? The market? The internal pay scale? By withholding this information, you’re telling candidates, “Our time is more valuable than yours.” Transparency about pay isn't just about dollars; it’s about respect, trust, and setting the tone for a healthy employer-employee relationship.

Transparency attracts top talent. Let’s be clear: sharing salary ranges isn’t just about ethics; it’s smart business. Studies show that companies with transparent pay practices build more trust, attract more diverse candidates, and ultimately fill roles faster. Hiding the salary range alienates strong candidates who refuse to play guessing games.

What are you afraid of? Are you worried the salary will deter candidates? If so, it might be time to reevaluate your compensation structure. Afraid current employees will see the listing and demand adjustments? That’s a separate issue and one worth addressing.

To employers reading this: Do better. Transparency is the future. Don’t just join the movement, lead it.

Well said, Michael. Not sharing salary details, paired with poor candidate experience, is a glaring red flag. In reality, if you’re subjected to this kind of treatment, consider it a blessing in disguise, you were saved from joining a company that wouldn’t truly value you anyway.

Totally agree - I wish all companies would post salaries upfront. It would save lots of wasted time from both sides. I love a mission-driven company but unfortunately, my credit cards do not care!
