How cyber-attacks can destroy our lives

In a survey we made a few weeks ago, the feedback we received was that many of you are particularly interested in learning about the fundamentals of cyber.?

It's all about staying safe.

After learning about the cyber-attacks that debilitated hospital?systems and resulted in mortalities, it's no surprise that large-scale organisations fear being shut down entirely by the destruction of their communications systems. Such threats can happen on all levels and in large systems such as national electric grids and transportation networks.

?Why Hack?

Simple. It pays well.

Cybercriminals attack organisations that deal with, store, and need to protect large amounts of data because data is worth millions, sometimes billions.?

The predatorial business of cybercrime is built to scale-up fast, and it has been growing in the shadows, side by dark side with its good-natured twin, the world of data management. Cyber-attacks have evolved to meet the growing capacity of data management and storage systems, which have developed elaborate security mechanisms to protect themselves against possible threats. We have weathered 'corks' that cybercriminals implanted on our computers, causing everything to move slowly. Today, a successful, savvy cyber-criminal knows how to stop everything we have on our system, stealing identities, funds, and even lives without leaving a trace.

?How can we prevent cyber-attacks?

Stop using computers and go back to good old pen-and-paper, of course!.... We all know that's not exactly an option.

Here's how you can start making your environment safer in cyberspace:

Personal emails are still an essential front in protecting against cybercrime. The first order of business is taking a few minutes from your schedule and downloading a good antivirus program. If you already have one, make sure it's updated. Go ahead and implement this across your platforms – smartphones and tablets. The basics of protection against cybercrime still hold, don't open suspicious emails, especially if you see they have attachments. Never click on links if you are unsure who sent them. It's common for cybercriminals to send out emails containing well-known institutions' names in the subject line. So always make sure you know who sent you the email or be in touch with the institution itself before opening the mail or clicking on a link.

?Get to know the dangers, not just the headlines.

Protection against cyber threats starts from understanding what the dangers are. It's all about learning from day one, the fundamentals of cyber-securityshould be taught in school, just like math and language. Learning about cyber threats and how to deter them is critical, especially at the employee level in an organisation where cyber-attacks can cause immense financial damage to a company and their reputation.
