In our journey to reshape narratives, we've learned that stories are not just stories—they are catalysts for change. In a five-part series over the next few days, we’ll explore key insights that guide our efforts in reshaping narratives for a brighter, more inclusive future for Arkansas. 1?? Stories Matter: Voices from local communities, especially in southern and rural areas, are crucial but often unheard. Supporting platforms that elevate these voices is not just necessary; it's transformative. 2?? Nonprofits Are Key: Nonprofit organizations have the potential to amplify mission-aligned issues and connect with community storytellers. However, many lack the necessary communications resources to make these connections effectively. 3?? Doing > Understanding: Understanding narrative change is one thing; implementing it is another. Effective narrative change requires a place-based strategy and deep relationship-building efforts. It’s about doing the hard work, not just using the buzzwords. Our approach goes beyond mere investments; it's about strategically reading and interpreting the ecosystems around us, fostering relationships, and building capacities. Excellent conversation this morning with Janina Peter, Bridging Gaps, UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network – Youth highlighting the power of storytelling in fundraising, Janina shared some great insights around the power of data, breaking down the numbers and impact that donors are having. Data by itself is an important indicator but often not enough on its own, rather transforming that data into stories and narratives is what will create real impact. NEW: In the 5 years since our launch, we’ve helped advance a corner of the local news industry that’s growing, thriving and showing promise as a path for sustaining local news. In our 2024 Impact Report, released today, we take a look at our progress. We’ve invested over $55 million in a portfolio of 44 nonprofit local news orgs - a portfolio that’s diverse in size, scope, reach and leadership. Some highlights from the report: - In the last year alone, our portfolio of 44 grantee organizations generated $86 million in revenue — a 36% increase over their 2022 revenue. This increase in revenue is an indicator that, with strategic investment and continued experimentation, nonprofit news has a viable future. - Year over year, the organizations in our portfolio are seeing a 58% median growth. - And this growth is leading to more journalism – last year, our portfolio of grantees employed 568 editorial and newsroom staff – an 18% increase over 2022. This report sheds light on how far we’ve come and sets the stage for what’s ahead, as we continue our pursuit to leverage philanthropy to build sustainable business models that will address the local news crisis at scale.
