How to Be Creative Outside of Your 9-5

It’s hard enough to work 40+ hours a week and meet all your basic needs, so what do you do when you want to be creative on top of it all??

  1. You carve out a time, and make it a routine.

When I lived in NYC and was working full-time in a call center, I’d write for @GenTwenty while I waited for the subway. I’d type in my phone’s notes app and then send myself the copy so that I could finish my essays when I got home.?

2. Set a ritual.

It’s very hard to just “turn on” your creative brain. I like to light a candle, listen to some of my favorite music and I will do a 10 minute writing warm up to a writing prompt just to shake out any cobwebs.?

3. Find a community.

Creativity doesn't happen in a vacuum. When you have someone to chat with, you can bounce ideas off of one another, get instant feedback, and test the waters with how an idea could be received. It’s so easy to talk yourself out of something when it’s just you, but having a community who is excited about what you’re working on is so encouraging.

I host writing sprints weekly on Thursday nights. They help with accountability and community, and I’d love to have you join and get your creative juices flowing. Sign up here: www.marinacrousewrites.com/writing-sprints
