HOW TO CREATE SPACE AND EASE IN YOUR DAILY LIFE.

So firstly, I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you I want to do these newsletters slightly more frequently but a little shorter, I thought that way I can give you all handy little thoughts and tips without waffling on. Anyway, here we go.

If you have ever worked with me, you will have no doubt heard me preaching the value of space.?

So few of us really treasure its presence in our lives.?

Space is that emptiness, the quiet, the slow.?

I know I struggled with it because I had a belief buried in my brain that you should always be working. I remember when I was a teen working in a bank, my parents always said it doesn’t matter if you are doing anything just “look busy” and people will see you as working hard.?

When we fight against space in our lives, when we look to fill any gap in our time with more tasks, think of a gap in our diaries as a chance to “finally do that thing” Then we become easily exhausted, and spread really thin.?

Have you ever noticed that the answers to persistent problems, or new ways of thinking often happen in the shower or on the toilet? That is because of the quiet, you are on your own, doing a task you can do on autopilot. You are in the space and you slow down.?

TOP TIPS FOR CREATING SPACE AND EASE IN YOUR LIFE

VALUE SAYING NO - Saying no is one of the most valuable tools in our box. How often do people please and try to do things for others and ignore your self? The truth is that if you are doing this you are likely only doing the tasks at less than 50% of your ability. Taking space for you to recharge allows you to meet the really important tasks with your best self. Don’t eat lunch while doing work, don’t answer emails during exercise, instead commit to what is in front of you and what you are trying to accomplish.?

FINDING THE MEDITATIVE VALUE - Meditation is a beautiful way to slow down, but so many of us try to commit to being a Zen master, personally, I use the calm app to get a 5-15 minute breathing exercise or wisdom in, but another trick I learned was to find the meditative value in daily tasks. So when I cook, when I do the washing, when I make the bed, I focus on the calm, I focus on something being created, the smell, the order of it. Focus on the meditative value and these tasks can become actually enjoyable.?

GETTING OUTDOORS -? Just a 15-minute walk can make a huge difference, not looking at a device, breathing purposefully, and slowing down. Personally I always go to the beach for a walk to clear my head.?

USING YOUR CALENDAR - If you looked at my calendar it looks rammed, but some of the things on there are to automate my life, it creates space in my brain not having to think about when or what to eat, I know when I will be doing that. Same with exercise, the same with creating space. I block time that is unmovable in my calendar for it.?

CREATING AN EMERGENCY FIRST AID KIT - I know that after a workshop or a big talk, I feel physically wiped out. I know sometimes my creative juices aren’t flowing. So I have learned to recognise when my body NEEDS that space. So I will block out my diary and I will dip into my first aid kit. It is full of things I know restore me, so reading, beach, seeing a film, eating a healthy meal out, going for a walk, and connecting with family. I have a huge list I will dip into when I know I need it.?

Space is where the magic happens, if you can imagine your brain like a stomach, it is being fed information all day and gets full. It is tough to digest and fit anything in. Creating space allows for mental digestion. It allows your brain to work smoothly and more efficiently and avoid burnout.?

My challenge to you is to create space in your life today and for the whole week, just a little bit of purposefully created space and do not fill it, not with plans, not with tasks just space. Notice how much easier your brain functions and the ease that comes with it.?

Cheers

Phil
