How to Create a Parent-Positive Company Culture

How to Create a Parent-Positive Company Culture

2022 has been quite a year for us! We have developed our first all-digital coaching product, Bold Parents. Working parents have been under enormous pressure for decades, but the pandemic highlighted and exacerbated these challenges. We were hearing from our clients in all sectors the need to help their employees balance work and family responsibilities. We started with building Bold Parents for new and soon-to-be working parents. Don’t worry there is more coming.

What is a Parent-Positive Culture?

Simply put, it is a culture where parents feel comfortable sharing the joys and challenges of being a working parent. The culture is made up of both formal and informal cultural attributes.

Formal cultural attributes are:

  • Parental and family leave policies
  • New mother rooms to support breastfeeding
  • Benefits: healthcare, supplemental (such as mental health support, coaching, tools, and resources) and lifestyle perks
  • Organization-wide remote and flexible work policies
  • Providing child benefits such as childcare reimbursement or on-site childcare

Whereas informal cultural attributes are things like:

  • Arrangements with direct manager to ease back into work after leave
  • Female and male leaders and executives that parent loudly, meaning they share their experiences  (the good, bad, and the ugly)
  • Flexible scheduling to accommodate childcare limitations
  • Measuring final work product versus “time in seat”
  • Inclusion of family for events and celebrations (picnics, bring your kids to work, holiday parties)
