How to Create a New User Account on macOS

If several people use the same Mac, setting up a new user account on macOS is advantageous because it enables everyone to have personalized settings, files, and permissions. This guide will guide you through the detailed steps to add a new user account on macOS.
Step 1: Open System Settings (or System Preferences)
1. Click on the Apple menu (?) in the top-left corner of your screen.
2. Select System Settings (on macOS Ventura and later) or System Preferences (on macOS Monterey and earlier).
3. Click on Users & Groups (in older versions) or Users & Accounts (in macOS Ventura and later).
Step 2: Unlock the Settings
1. If the settings are locked, click on the lock icon in the lower-left corner.
2. Enter your administrator password or use Touch ID (if available) to unlock the settings.
Step 3: Add a New User
1. Click the Add Account or Add (+) button below the list of users.
2. Choose the Account Type:
- Administrator – Grants full control over the Mac.
- Standard – Allows access to most functions but cannot manage other users.
- Sharing Only – Grants limited access to shared files without a full user profile.
- Managed with Parental Controls – For children, with restrictions and monitoring.
Step 4: Enter User Details
1. Full Name – Enter the user's full name.
2. Account Name – This is automatically generated, but you can edit it.
3. Password – Set a secure password and verify it.
4. Password Hint – (Optional) Provide a hint to help remember the password.
Step 5: Create the Account
1. Click Create User (or Done on newer macOS versions).
2. If needed, enable Allow user to administer this computer to grant admin privileges.
Step 6: Set Up the New Account
- The new user can log in from the login screen.
- Upon first login, they will go through the macOS setup process, including Apple ID and iCloud settings.
Optional: Customize User Settings
- Go back to Users & Groups to assign a profile picture.
- Enable Fast User Switching to quickly switch between accounts.
- Use Parental Controls if managing a child’s account.
