How to create Great Designs?

“Design is the body language of your marketing. Don’t slouch.” -Mark King

Through design, you can create emotional reactions. Through imagery, you can create excitement, develop trust, entertain, and connect with your audience. But to do this well you need to understand what good design really is. Good design is an art and a science.

So, let's go over some important ways to understand good design from a marketing perspective.

This week we'll look at:

???? 5 Great Design Tools for Marketing

The beauty of graphic design lies in taking something simple and making it extraordinary. It’s never been easier to put designs together and that’s what makes it harder to stand out today. Here are three basic rules for making a lasting impression.

The Tripod of Good Graphic Design

1. Create Something Unique

With many brands out there producing fantastic designs, being unique can be challenging. Look at the competition and other brands to get an idea of what they’re doing well, but avoid copying – it won’t make you unique and there’s no way to know if their design strategies are working or not. Look at others to get inspired but use your imagination to stand out. Go for a walk. Do something different. Get the creative juices flowing.

2. Clean Design

Overcrowding and cramming too much information in just won't work. Keep the design clean and concise to get the message across. Make the important point stand out, focus on the benefits, and have a strong call to action. If the design is intended to invoke a certain feeling rather than promote action, the same principle applies. People only remember 1 or 2 things from an ad, a speech or a brochure. Focus on the 1 thing you really want them to remember.

3. Know Your Purpose

In marketing, the purpose of any design is (usually) about more than looking good. The question you should ask is: does it fulfil its intended purpose? You need to test your designs to find out. Make sure you test out variations of the colour scheme, imagery, fonts, and other important elements. Check the data, test and iterate. Great marketing design isn't judged by how many colleagues think it looks great, it's judged by how many of your audience take the desired action.
