How to Create a Dragon-Slaying Slide Deck for Your Next Big Presentation

You got the email — the one confirming that you've been picked to speak and you're excit-ified (excited + terrified).

You know you're good at presenting, but making slides... ugh.

You know the basics — not too much text, easy to read, etc.

But you're hopping onto a new stage and you want to really crush it! You want a standing ovation at the end, an offer from the host to come back next year, and a flood of new customers.

That's a tall order, but I have a solution.

There are tons of templates out there that have great designs — SlidesCarnival, Canva, etc.

But when you get one, you either have a whole lot of nothing to say or you decend into a flurry of brain vomit that doesn't make much sense later.

That's why I created a Dragon-Slaying Presentation Framework that's based on making your listener the hero in your story.

Your listener has a dragon to slay and you have the tools and training to help them win... but will they pay attention before it's too late...

Ok... let's do this! Your presentation should flow in phases that accomplish very specific goals. Let me show you how they should work...

Phase 1: Operation "Put Your Phone Down & Pay Attention"

When you first strut out onto that stage, you have their attention. But once the slides start, you have to fight to keep it.

If they pull out their phone while you're talking about how freakin' amazing and qualified you are, you have to work so much harder to get them back.

You need to grab their attention fast.

You can do this with a framework called PAS or Problem, Agitate, Solution. And to make it even more powerful, you can weave in a story about a client that faced this same problem and you helped them solve it.

• Past Client Chris tried to accomplish a goal.
• Chris tried, but he found a dragon he couldn't beat.
• He went to a brave knight that said he'd fought that dragon before and bought a map and suit of armor.
• He still lost.
• That's when Chris met me and I helped him slay that dragon and 10 more using the very things I'm going to teach you today.

Phase 2: Why Do They Need to Fight the Dragon

Now you need to deal with your biggest competitor head-on — "The Nothing." Every person in that room has the choice to do absolutely nothing and ignore everything you have to say.

• You may be sitting there today thinking "I don't want that bad enough to fight a dragon."
• or "I don't think I have to fight that dragon right this minute, I can do it later."
• But you know that won't happen.
• If you don't fight this dragon right now, you're just setting yourself up for failure and missing out on the treasure that awaits you on the other side.
• It is possible to defeat this dragon easier and faster than you think and I'm going to show you how.

Phase 3: There Are Obstacles On The Way To The Dragon

So you have them primed and ready to fight the dragon (finally) — but it's not so easy. There's a journey to that dragon that's fraught with obstacles along the way.

Let's help them understand what they're up against and why they've probably had so much trouble getting that dragon slayed in the first place.

• Chris struggled to fight his dragon because he wasn't prepared for the obstacles and he was beat down before he even got there.
• He didn't know about the trolls under the bridge.
• He didn't know about the cheshire cat.
• He didn't know about the mad queen.
• But you won't be like Chris, I'm going to prepare you for all those obstacles.

Phase 4: Don't Get Lost On The Way To The Dragon

Dangers lurk at every turn, but there's nothing to worry about because you've taken others down this path successfully and you can guide them too.

Let's talk about some steps they should know if they want to make that journey successfully.

• If you're going to defeat the trolls, you're going to have to be quick. Here's my recipe for a magical potion that will make you invisible and fast so you can swoosh past them.
• If you're going to defeat the cheshire cat, you're going to need all of your wits about you, so arm yourself with my recipe for a potion that will sharpen your mind and let you avoid his tricks.
• If you're going to defeat the mad queen, you're going to need courage. Take this recipe for a potion that will give you the fighting spirit of a hundred of the strongest warriors.

Phase 5: Weapons You Need to Fight the Dragon

Now they're prepared. They know what could happen if they ignore this dragon. They know the path isn't easy, but they feel confident they know what to expect.

You've given them some secrets to help them get prepared for the obstacles along the way... but there's still the dragon.

• Chris did the work, he made those potions and he got stronger, faster, and more courageous. He was ready to fight that dragon, but he was still missing a few things.
• Trolls, cats, and mad queens are nothing compared to dragons.
• To defeat dragons, you need the strongest of armor - you need armor that is strong, yet nimble, made of the best materials.
• To defeat dragons, you need the sharpest of blades - you need a blade that is sharp, yet light enough to allow you to move quickly.
• To defeat dragons, you need to be able to fight for days without rest or food - you need to be able to endure until you think you can't any more.

Phase 6: What Can You Do TODAY To Prepare To Fight Dragons

They need to know it's not hopeless. That dragon sounds hard to defeat, so we need to make it easier.

• You might be thinking that dragon sounds hard to beat.
• Chris thought that too. Even with everything I gave him to prepare.
• You don't have to fight that dragon today, but it's time to start preparing. So let's talk about what you can do right now.
• You can learn how to make the troll-fighting potion.
• You can learn to make the cat-fighting potion.
• You can learn to make the queen-fighting potion.

Phase 7: Off You Go Brave Knight... By The Way...

Now they are feeling that energy and it's time to pitch what you have to offer that help them.
